Installing USB connected printer. Already tried solutions from HP solutions for "installation error on Winsows XP: Windows update and unchecking startup and services from config file. These were all after uninstalling previous printer software/drivers.

Hello rc90214
The Fatal Error can be caused for many different things but the following article should help resolve your error. If you need any further help please post back with whether or not you get a 4 digit error code and any more detail about the fatal error like what part of the installation it occurs in.
When a solution is found please mark the post that solves your issue.

The Fatal Error occured when the Install process was configuring the printer; looks like near the end.
I do not get a 4 digit error code. I checked the event viewer and there are no error messages. I ran the install again and here is the error message:
Error Situation Code: 30270472 at the top of error box.
The following lines were retrieved from the installation error logs.
LaunchApp(X:\hpqtra08.exe -shutDown,1,0000000,00000000 failed with 2
Error opening key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\Install\{9D6C64CC-EA
Timed out waiting for product finish event
The above message is repeated again.

Hello rc90214
Glad the basic driver is working for you. If you are up for one more try I would suggest running the L3/L4 uninstaller.
From Original installation CD:
1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer
2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open
3. Open folder Util
4. Open folder CCC
5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads
9. Download the full feature software and drivers
10. Run the download to reinstall the printer
If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:
1. Type %temp% in the run field
2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
3. Open folder Util
4. Open folder CCC
5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads
9. Download the full feature software and drivers
10. Run the download to reinstall the printer
Else the following article can provide a workaround to scanning if you need it.
