hp 1312nfi fax

My HP1312nfi (OS Windows 7 ultimate) is connected to my ground line, will not fax to a handful of fax machines and it will not recognise a punch of fax machines to receive a fax, after wasting an hour chatting with a special technician for the 1312nfi he concluded that I need to leave the setting of the fax answer mode on Automatic instead of the manual. This way I will loose all other phone calls. Is there a different solution to this problem or am I stuck with the situation?

The answer mode setting of auto or manual will not effect the sending of faxes.  It will only affect if the unit picks up.  It sounds like the fax call is failing during the send or receive.  I would try setting the fax speed to slow or medium.  This will force the unit to use a slower protocol which can be more robust.  It is found in the setup menu - fax setup - advanced.
