My printer has just given me an error message of "Remove and check cartridge on right". I have no idea what that means. If anyone knows how to correct this, I would appreciate the information. I am not very savy on the computer and printer. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Try cleaning the cartridge contacts as shown here (for a different cartridge, but similar). If that does not help check the spring and make sure it has not become dislodged and damaged the flex as shown here. If the flex is damaged your printer will require service.

Well, I just had the same problem with my printer. I got the message "Check printer cartridge on the right" Checked it and checked it and nothing. So I went online, and found out about a flex circuit on these that is behind the cartriges with a giant spring with a pointed end. Apparently a bunch of people have punctured these circuites unknowingly because of a stupid design flaw by HP.
Calling the HP help dest is pointless because I get an indian who tells me the printer is too old and should get a new one? oh really? I could certainly understand if the motor went, or the heads burned up but this was a DESIGN FLAW. I would at least expect HP to stand by their faulty design and at least FIX it for free.
Instead the woman tried to say she would give me a discount on a new all-in-one printer. She said these were deep discounts, and after telling her I would think about it and looking up the printers online, there was NO DISCOUNT. I could have bought the same printers she was offering me at a lesser amount than she offered.
I decided to give up on it and bought a Canon ![]()

This might offer an alternative to paying someone to service the printer or buying a new one. If your flex cable is not damage, this costs $5 (for Quikplastic which is a moldable epoxy/plastic claylike material) and takes about 15 min to perform.
Thanks to this and other forums I discovered the root cause was a small plastic retention tab on the carriage that holds the spring was broken. Without this tab, the spring wouldn't maintain contact with the flex cable so printer kept giving me the error to check my cartridge. Reseating cartridge worked at first but eventually the tab complete broke off and my printer was unusuable.
I've included links to some pics ( http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg204/MS64MEE/O
0) You'll need to leave the printer plugged so that you can move the carriage to the center. Obviously, working on a product that's plugged in has risks. Proceed at your own risk.
1) Clean area on carriage with isopropyl alcohol and cotton swab
2) Squeeze quikplastic through hole from outside of carriage until hole is filled and enough remains to fill in diagonal cavity on carriage
3) On inside of carriage, position spring properly and mold quikplastic around the spring and form dome of around it. Make sure quikplastic on this side is solidly connected to the stuff you pushed through the hole.
4) Use something smooth and hard to flatten the quikplastic so that it does not protrude into path of ink cartridge. I applied a little isopropyl to my smoothening device to minimize sticking during this step.
5) Per instructions, let quikplastic cure (minimum 2-3 hours but I let mine set overnight.
6) Reinstall printer cartridge. If it works you're golden. If not, you're only out $5 and 15 minutes
It's been 5 days as of this post and printer has been working fine (fingers crossed that it stays that way). I wasn't looking forward to forking out cash for a new printer so this quick and cheap fix suited me just fine.
Hope this helps someone in same boat as me.

Hi! Its unfortunate, but glad to hear there are others experiencing the same issue with the damaged flex circuit. I have been hobbling along using the AIO with just the color ink cartridge, which seems to work fine. But.... the front panel no longer is accessible due to the 'black cartridge' error message I am getting. The environmentally right thing to do, I feel, is to not toss it, but to keep using it. But the hobbling along part is tedious to work around. In order to make a copy, I need to scan the document, then print, something I no longer really do; I'm not so sure that the auto feeder works, I would love to scan a stack of documents and just keep as a scanned doc file.
I am posting this in the hope that someone from HP can either provide a keypress sequence to bypass the display's error message. This should allow someone to use the front panel keypad. If there is not a keypress sequence, then it would be great if there was a FW update to allow the error message bypass. Just a thought on how apparently the many other owners with this problem on this otherwise greater printer / AIO could continue to use it as it was designed. Thanks, Frank V

d flex chip is broken
As I mentioned nearly four years ago - if the flex is damaged the printer will require service or replacement. The Officejet Pro 8600 may be a good replacement for the Officejet 7310.
