I am managing a hosted server running windows server 2003. I have a user connecting through RDP and trying to map printers. she has a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600. I can't find drivers for Windows Server 2003. I tried the XP driver but it won't install. It says I have the wrong software.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get around this? I've looked into some Universal Drivers but they don't make much sense to me.

Their are no drivers for windows Server. We are running Terminal Services so we need to install the drivers onto the server as well as the local desktop but we can't.
HP sucks for this. You really have to check to make sure the right drivers are there or you get stuck with an incompatible printer.
The 1212 all-in-ones have win2003server drivers but the printer is crap, I bought two and both have broken already. I used to use 3030s but they kept getting the "error 79" bug and became useless. These printers are not even small-business ready.

Thanks for the reply. Not exactly the answer I was hoping for. I have had other printers work with the XP driver. I can't say that I ever found an HP printer with server 2003 driver.
We are also running Terminal Services. Most of the workers are logging in from home and want to print to their personal printers. They already have the drivers on the local machine so it would just be getting it on the server. I thought saying Map Printers would take care of it but I learned otherwise.
Hopefully someone else will have a solution.

The installation CD will not work on a Windows Server 2003 installation. However, Server 2003 will recognize the x32 driver for the HP8600 printer if you install the printer from the Control Panel. The printer driver you want to use is in the root folder of the installation CD (open the CD in "Explore" mode to browse the directory). The driver file name is "HPOJ8600_fax.inf".
When your printer installation wizard prompts you for the driver name, click on the "Have Disk" button and then browse to the driver on the 8600 Installation CD - then select the correct driver for the printer function of the device.
I imagine you can follow these same steps to setup your fax utility - though I didn't do that on my machine.

I had the same issue when attempting to install the driver from the self extracting download. OS not compatible....
But it is the correct driver, you just have to do it a certain way...
Download and extract the driver from HP. (Use a third party zip tool, like 7zip to extract to folder)
Open the Printers and Faxes window on your 2003 server.
Click File and select Printer Server. Install the driver from here. (x86) Use the have disk and point to your extracted folder. Just use the Autorun.inf file.
This has installed the driver and allowed the printer to redirect from RDP even from a Windows 7 PC
Cheers

Hi
Follow the instructions below.
1. Open devices and printer
2. Click Add a printer
3. Click Add a local printer
4. From the Use existing port select the USB option, and then click next
5. Click on the Windows Update button to get all support window 7 drivers updated
6. Once update is finished. Click on HP from left menu, and then select the Deskjet 990c from the right menu, and then click next.
7. Follow the remaining instructions to complete the installation.
Once you have the 990c printer added make sure it is the default printer, and then try printing to your Officejet 8600 printer using this driver. Let me know if you have the same issue?

pcwizard....thanks for the info...I did run into a few issues though..
1. I didn't have USB option for Existing Ports.
2. After I ran the Windows Update, I couldn't find Dskjet 990c.

When I go to download the 990C it does not show that it supports windows server 2003. I'm not sure what to do. I am also not sure if I do the 32bit or the 64bit.
