Re: my printer installation failed because it required digital signing. how do i do this?

I have Windows Vista.  First I got a Fatal Error Microsoft Installer (MSI) Error 1603 but then it looked like the system would search for a solution to overcome it.  It got to where the old installation was removed and then reinstallation was going well UNTIL I got the message that it encountered a problem:  Windows found driver software but encountered an error while installing:  It said:

THIS OPERATION REQUIRES AN INTERACTIVE WINDOW STATION

What is it an how do I get it?  I feel really close to getting this to work.

Hi. I was able to locate the "setupapi.dev.log" that you requested.  I do not see an attachment button on the reply and I'm not sure how to send this.  The last time I tried to reinstall the driver software everything was going well until I got this message:

Windows found the driver software but encountered an error while installing.  A Microsoft Installer (MSI) error 1603.

THIS OPERATION REQUIRES AN INTERACTIVE WINDOW STATION.

I think you may have a problem with your operating system.

I did a search for the INTERACTIVE Error message and found plenty of hits for problems including this one

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/this-operation-requires-an-i...

Also the MSI 1603 Error has a lot of fixes out there, including this tool.

http://www.pcmmc.com/msi-1603-error.php

I would recommend doing some searching and investigation around this operating system problem.

Good luck

Re: my printer installation failed because it required digital signing. how do i do this?

You can open the setupapi.dev.log file in notepad or any other text editor you have. You can go to the end of the file and copy maybe the last 50-100 lines or so and past them in a message.

The Windows Installer error is most typical if you are not running as an admin user. Make sure you are running in an account with administrator permissions.

We can find out which MSI is failing by checking the event viewer. Go to Start button and in the search box enter the following

eventvwr.msc

The Event Viewer will be displayed.
On the left side select the little arrow next to Windows Logs to open it.
Select the Application Logs.
The center column will show a list of events. We're looking for events that have the Level of "Error" and the source is MsiInstaller. Find the one with the Date/Time of when you received the error.
On the Right hand column bottom select Copy->Copy Details as Text and then you can paste it into a message.

Re: my printer installation failed because it required digital signing. how do i do this?

Hi.  Here is the earliest Event Viewer record of an ERROR with source Msinstaller.  As I was scrolling through, I was surprised at how many ERRORs there were.  Many were associated with Bonjour ??  There were are few other ERRORs with Msinstaller but here is the earliest I found?  Does this help?  What should be done next?

Or, did you want the most recent event log record?? The printer stopped working only recently this past week and not last year.

A potential fix for that issue is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/printer-wont-install-error-1...

It seems that you've got several different issues occurring though and could be potentially infected with a virus that is corrupting files.

You might try using system restore to restore to an earlier time. you might go back to sometime last week.
