I have repeatedly tried to install Photosmart C4200 software and drivers for a C4280 printer on a new Win 7-64 system. Printer and cable work fine on a Win XP system. I have tried all the recommended fixes and troubleshooting. Devices and Printers>Device Troubleshooting indicates driver not installed. Initiating a scan from the C4280 UI reports USB not connected. Any new inspiration or suggestions is appreciated.

Hello dkhedstrom
It sounds like you may not be using the Windows 7 driver. Are you using the CD that came with the printer? Have you tried uninstalling the printer and downloading the most current driver? If the re-installation doesn't work please summarize what fixes/troubleshooting you have done.
When a solution is found please mark the post that solves your issue.

I agree I do not seem to have the correct drivers.
Summary of efforts and findings:
I do not have the installation CD. I have been downloading from the website: PS_AIO_C4200_NonNet_Full_Win_WW_130_140.exe
Repeated several times with as complete an uninstall as I can muster and intervening re-boots.
Followed steps in troubleshooting guide (disable virus detect, disable TSR's, etc.)
Changed USB cable
Changed USB ports--back panel, front panel...
Tested cable and printer on XP system-OK
Finally: exasperation
I appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi dkhedstrom,
From Original installation CD:
1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer
2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open
3. Open folder Util
4. Open folder CCC
5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\System Tools
8. Download the full feature software and driver
9. Run the downloaded software
If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:
1. Type %temp% in the run field
2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
3. Open folder Util
4. Open folder CCC
5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\System Tools
8. Download the full feature software and driver
9. Run the downloaded software

Still no success.
Device Manager is displaying what appears to be valid drivers. The installer stalls indicating, "Device setup has failed to complete." I'm not sure if I tried this before, but I selected Retry and eventually the installer issued a fatal error. And the familiar driver install error. I have also attached the installation error log. (Sorry about this page formating I am having trouble placing the images in rational places.) --DKH (

This was an interesting exercise, but unhelpful. The error message I extracted from the log, 1602, is not listed. The link to HP troubleshooting website (code not listed) is circular back to this same page. Return=3010 is not listted either.
Windows 7 installer does not allow for installation options such as drivers only.
Next?

Hi dkhedstrom,
When you are attempting to install the printer make sure you have no windows updates in process or installing any other software.
1602 = ERROR_INSTALL_USEREXIT 1602 The user cancels installation

I do not think any installs or pending updates were operating at the time, but I will retry the April 3 11:47 procedure again. This is getting dreary. --Dean

Hi dkhedstrom,
You may have an issue with the operating system on the computer. You may want to consider a clean install or Full system restore on your computer. Make sure the backup your data before restoring the OS.
