Re: photosmart c4788 - installation issue

Hello Travis_c

No, this solution does not work.

Whille searching on the net , the closest solution I got was

http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1382359.htm

and

http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/error-1402-error-1406-acrobat.html

and some more links which can be reached by googling with 'error code 1402'

Looks like there has been some error in the "registry"

Could you provide a solution which may be equivalent to the links given above.

Any support on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: photosmart c4788 - installation issue

Hello msingh

Did you try the article for MSI Error 1406? It may resolve your issue as it is similar to 1402. You may find it HERE.

If that fails or if you want to try something else first try the steps below to run the HP Uninstaller.

From Original installation CD:

1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer

2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open

3. Open folder Util

4. Open folder CCC

5. Run the L4uninstall.exe

6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer

7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools

8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player

http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

9. Download the full feature software and drivers

Photosmart C4788 Software

10. Run the download to reinstall the printer

If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:

1. Type %temp% in the run field

2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)

3. Open folder Util

4. Open folder CCC

5. Run the L4uninstall.exe

6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer

7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools

8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player

http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

9. Download the full feature software and drivers

Photosmart C4788 Software

10. Run the download to reinstall the printer

Re: photosmart c4788 - installation issue

Travis, unfortunately even this solution is not working. I've tried Microsoft Fixit as well but that failed too. Hope there is a way I can fix this problem soon.

It still continues to give the same error :

Error 1402. Could not open key: <Keyname>.

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact hp.com

Most of the solutions available on the net are not for Windows 7 ... but other versions instead.

thanks

Re: photosmart c4788 - installation issue

Hello msingh

In the <Keyname> does it not give you a specific key or path? From what I was able to look up it has to do with not having permissions to edit the registry which can be caused by multiple issues within Windows. Make sure you are using an Administrator account. Do you have another PC that you are/were able to install the printer on?

Re: photosmart c4788 - installation issue

Travis_C,

The key mentioned is as follows

unknown\components\1FA18F7974E099CD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\97B0E634BFC2F5E439081EC7B1520D5C

Since I copied this manually, I hope I've not made any mistake.

I've also run registry cleeanup offered by Norton antivirus.

In fact the program was running very well on my HP laptop and suddenly it stopped printing. I unstalled the program and when i tried to reinstall it, the error has been coming up. Yes I'm logged in as an administrator

thank you all the support so far

Hello msingh

I am still looking into your problem and appreciate your patience. You may want to make sure Windows is up to date including optional updates.

You may have to manually go in and change some registry permissions. If you are not comfortable with making these changes you may want to seek some help. As always when messing with the registry you should make a back up and you may also want to backup any important files. Back up the registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\

Is the path you should look into. You should notice \S-1-5-18\Components. Inside components you should be able to locate the key you specified.

components\1FA18F7974E099CD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\97B0E634BFC2F5E439081EC7B1520D5C

(I notice an extra \ hidden in the middle of that key. During the following step make note if you can expand this key if so check the permission on just the key "1FA18F7974E099CD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8")

Right click on this key and you should notice permissions as an option. In the popup box make sure your username as well as SYSTEM and Administrators are listed. Also select each and make sure Full Control and Read are checked.

The following link is to a guide for fixing a 1402 error with a different application. It has some really good pictures for showing what kind of windows you might see. I wouldn't change any permissions just yet but this will let you see if any are missing. If you could take a screenshot of the permissions for they key you specified.

How to fix 'Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN...

Hello msingh

First of all I'm glad I was able to help you get your printer installed! :smileyvery-happy:

As per your question I'm not certain of a particular cause. From what I understand the permissions to the registry got changed somehow. It may have had something to do with Norton or the Norton Registry cleaner. In my own personal experience I don't use Registry Cleaners. Often times they can do more harm than good. Not saying they can't be good its just my experience.
