Re: photosmart c5180, scan error after upgrading to windows7

I have a Toshiba laptop and it has 4 usb ports and I tried all 4 usb ports and 3 of them would not work or only parsley worked. The speaker usb port was the only one that showed promise. I then found HP SOLUTION CENTER icon and clicked on it & when it opened, HOME icon is showing at the bottom of the page. I then clicked on HOME icon to open it. I then clicked on the scanner button, this is where the blue wording “HP Photosmart C5100 series disconnected” showed up. I now found out if I just wait about 20 sec the scanner will open.

Re: photosmart c5180, scan error after upgrading to windows7

Hello SailorJack

Thanks for clarifying what you meant. I have noticed similar things with my experience using laptops. Sometimes some ports don't provide enough power from the USB to power the device. The same thing happens when you use a USB hub. RLel did mention though that their printer is hardwired to the network.

Re: photosmart c5180, scan error after upgrading to windows7

Hello RLel

First off I appreciate your patience with the troubleshooting process.

Now lets check on the Windows Image Acquisition service.

1. Type services.msc in run or search program and files
2. Scroll down to the WIA Windows Image Acquisition
3. Make sure that this service is running. Click Stop, and then Restart to make sure
4. Restart the computer

Restart the Dependencies services:
1. Click on Start, in Search box type “services” without quotes.
2. Scroll down until you see Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
3. Double click on it and go to the tab called Dependencies.
4. 2 services should be listed.
5. Exit that window and look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
6. Make sure it’s on manual or if it is on Auto, just leave it. Make sure the service is started though.
7. Go to Shell Hardware Detection and Double click.
8. Set the Start up Type as Manual and hit Apply.
9. You should be able to Start the service by hitting Start.
10. Now you are done and the Twain Manager should be working and not give you an error.

Check dependencies or sub dependencies:

Right click on WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition) selecting first properties and then the dependencies tab. It should list: Remote Procedure Call RPC and Shell Harward Detection

Under RPC it will then list DCOM Service Process Launcher and RPC Endpoint Mapper Go back to the main services.msc list and then right click and start all the items listed as dependencies or sub dependencies under WIA

Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" to those that help solve your problems.

Re: photosmart c5180, scan error after upgrading to windows7

Hello Travis,

i am back again. still no solution for scanning via HP solution center. I have done some other tests. Perhaps they can help you finding a solution. i have no work around for OCR

1) import scan via adobe photoshop elements6. I have 2 possibilities.

a) using c5100, 192.168.1.104 =>  pop up scan image from HP solution center => scanning OK and finished

b) using wia-hp photosmart c5100 => pop up adobe image => scanning OK and finished

2) import scan via windows live photo gallery

using c5100, 192.168.1.104 => pop up windows image => scanning OK and finished

Hi RLel,

How old is this laptop you are having the issues?

Did you upgrade from Vista to Win 7 on this laptop?

If you upgraded run the following update below

Re: photosmart c5180, scan error after upgrading to windows7

Hello Travis,

patch did not work.

I have a acer desktop type aspire E571 with vista operating system. I bought it  in 2007. I just made an upgrade to windows 7.

I suppose that there is something wrong with the software of hp solution center. Via adobe photoshop elements 6 i saw the screens of HP solution center scanning working well.

Hi RLel,

Install this printer on a different computer, and let me know if you have the same issues?

Re: photosmart c5180, scan error after upgrading to windows7

Hi Travis,

I bought a new sony pc for my daughter 4 weeks ago. Windows 7 was pre-installed. I downloaded and installed the full feature software and drivers. Hp solution software works perfectly for scanning an image or document. I saw the same HP screens as i saw via photoshop element 6.0 on my pc via import c5100,192.168.1.101 TWAIN.

Windows vista was pre-installed on my pc and i upgraded to windows 7 ultimate.

Re: photosmart c5180, scan error after upgrading to windows7

Hi RLel,

If the printer works correctly on your daughters computer, then there may be some issues with the operating system on your computer which is contributing to the install failure on this computer. Have you considered backing up your data, and then run a full system recovery on your computer?
