followed the advice in online help: "Print cartridge alignment failed" but still continues to give me that error message when I select align print cartridge from within the printer display.
The help message describes that a defective sensor could give this message. How do you id a defective sensor and repair? Thanks.
Print appears relatively sharp but reds dominate

Sorry to read you are having this problem.
Alignment issues definitely cause an overabundance or lack of color on prints. If the alignment continues to fail, I would take out all the print cartridges, ensuring they are hp genuine cartridges and clean the backs of them. Use filtered water and a coffee filter or other lint free cloth. Then try reseating the cartridges and running the alignment again.
Although I work for HP, my posts and replies are my own opinion and not those of HP.

Yes they are genuine. Just opened the black "96" myself. "97" still has 1/4 left.

Used coffee filter with filtered water to clean. There were no globs of ink but the ink came off cartridge in appropriate amounts.
Then try reseating the cartridges and running the alignment again.
Got initial message to reseat the black. After I did that and tried alignment got same error message.
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!
How do I check for a bad sensor if that could be the cause?

Thanks for your suggestions.

The only way I know to test a bad sensor is multiple good cartridges. Are there any colors lacking on the page or is the red just dominant?
