Re: solutioncenter.msi popup at HP Solution Center startup

Thank you for your assistance. In all of the forum threads about the solutioncenter.msi popup and possible solutions (there were multitudes) never once in any of the answers did anyone suggest that the popup was related to the PRINTER connected to the laptop and not just the laptop alone.  Everyone is searching for answers on their laptop not realizing the problem is the printer.  I uninstalled and then reinstalled all the software related to my printer and the messages are gone.  Maybe you can post something to the forum for solutioncenter.msi and let them know that other people have been leading them in the wrong direction.  You would be a godsend to all those people who are still having this issue unresolved.

Thank you!  Vicki

Re: solutioncenter.msi popup at HP Solution Center startup

Folks - this pop up usually occurs because the HP Solution Center application expects to see a specific version of Flash 9 installed on your PC (Represented by the Flash9b.ocx and FlashUtil9b.exe files). Unfortunately, this version of Flash is riddled with bugs, so everytime you update Flash, those files are blown away, which leads to the SolutionCenter.msi pop-up issue. Fixing the problem using the original install cd (Which uses the Solutioncenter.msi file) is not a good idea, because it just puts this buggy, highly insecure Flash version back on your PC.

The safest workaround is to create copies of the current Flash version files (Currently Flash10c.ocx and FlashUtil10c.exe respectively) in the install directory, which is usually either C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash for 32bit Windows users or C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash for Vista/Windows 7 x64 users. Then rename those file copies to Flash9b.ocx and FlashUtil9b.exe. That way, the Solution Center application will find the files it wants, but will actually be using the most up to date version of Flash. The app will work and your pc won't be insecure as the result of using older, buggier versions of Flash.

Note that you will have to do this everytime Flash gets updated, which seems to be every few months. Not the most elegant solution, but it seems to work.

Re: solutioncenter.msi popup at HP Solution Center startup

If dosulliv91 is correct, the correct way to fix this is for HP to update Solutioncenter.msi to look for FlashUtil*.exe and use the current version.

Is there a way for the enduser to update a registry entry or a file to reflect the current version of FlashUtil to SolutionCenter programs?

This is the first solution I have seen yet that makes sense.

My question is how do I create copies of the Flash 10 files in the install directory? I'm using Vista 64 and clicked on "copy" but nothing seems to happen - what is the correct way to do this?

Bumboola - highlight both files, select 'Copy' from the right click menu, then right click onto a blank part of the directory (i.e. Don't right click on another file) and select 'Paste'. A copy of each of the files will be created in the directory (You may get see some UAC prompts - just say yes to them all). Rename them per my earlier post and you should be in business.

Re: solutioncenter.msi popup at HP Solution Center startup

I had the problem with 'status.msi' and 'smartwebprintingOC' .

The Solution you provided above helped me a lot. Thanks. I am confused, why we HP, users/customers are facing such problems.

Regards,

Nasser

Re: solutioncenter.msi popup at HP Solution Center startup

dosulliv91  After putting up with this problem for ages and not being able to find a solution, I stumbled upon your solution ( don't know much about these things).  I tried it and it did not work.  I did a check and the program was looking for Flash 9e.ocx and FlashUtil 9e.exe.  I had done as you suggested, so I just went to the directory and changed Flash 9b.ocx and FlashUtil 9b.exe to Flash 9e.ocx and FlashUtil 9e.exe and it now works correctly.

Thank you very much for putting me on the right track.  Apparently my install disc had an updated version of Flash from the one you worked with.  Thought I would write this so others trying your fix and finding it does not work could try changing Flash as I did.

Avoca39,

Yeah it's quite possible that there are a few different revs of Solutioncenter floating around that have been hardcoded to expect different versions of Flash. I've just confirmed that my setup is working with the Flash 9b files, so that's what my version of Solutioncenter requires apparently. Unfortunately, I can't edit my original post, so hopefully folks will read on to see your much appreciated update. :smileyhappy:

Re: solutioncenter.msi popup at HP Solution Center startup

I followed Mukesh's solution and it indeed solved the problem. Unfortunately, it also created a new one which is much worse! Now when I start Windows I get repeating, quickly flickering messages which are labeled alternatively "Status" and "Windows Installer". They say "Please wait while Windows installs Status" or "please wait while Windows installs" with the name of a program. Sometimes there are literally hundreds before it stops! I uninstalled and deleted the Clean Up utility, and it's still happening! Help! How do I put a stop to this?
