Can't install Deskjet D4160 on Windows 8 upgrade

I just upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8.  My Deskjet D4160 worked fine prior to the upgrade.  I downloaded the recommended driver update for Windows 8.  I run the install progran and everything works fine until it tells me to connect the USB and it goes to actually install the drivers.

When it gets to that point I plug in the USB and the printer is detected.  The progress bar gets halfway and then stops.  If hangs there for awhile and then an X appears.  The install program continues to run and then times out.

The printer does not connect and the available error messages then me that the installation failed reinforcing the bleeding obvious.

I get the following error log:

The following lines were retrieved from the installation error logs.

The log is then sent to HP and the install program searches for a solution and finds none.  I am then referred to a long list of things to try at http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html.  In the mean time it rolls the installation, re-boots and tells me to try again with the same results.

Is there a workaround or do I simple need to get a new printer designed specificaly for Windows 8?

Re: Can't install Deskjet D4160 on Windows 8 upgrade

Did you download the correct drivers as Win 8 has drivers for 64 bit and 32 bit.

Re: Can't install Deskjet D4160 on Windows 8 upgrade

Well I should be running 64 bit and those are the drivers I tried to install.  I suppose I could try the 32 bit.  I will try that as the other doesn' work.

Re: Can't install Deskjet D4160 on Windows 8 upgrade

If the Win 8 is 64 bit, then you'll have to use the 64 bit only.
Note -- > Have you uninstalled the HP Deskjet D4160 entries from Programs and features. as mentioned above..

Re: Can't install Deskjet D4160 on Windows 8 upgrade

There is only one download and it contains both the 32 bit and 64 bit.  The installation program did not give me an option which drivers to select.  I assume that the setup program installs the correct set.  And yes I have done a complete unstall of all HP programs using Revo Uninstaller which also removes any left over registry entries and files/folders.

Re: Can't install Deskjet D4160 on Windows 8 upgrade

Hello,

Lets  try installing an alternate driver.

Please perform the below steps that might solve the Printing Problem.

1. Type in Control Panel .
3. Under control panel  click on Devices and Printers
4.On top-left, click on Add a Printer
5.Click on Add a Local Printer
6.Then while "Use an Existing port" is selected , select "Virtual USB port ... " then click Next
7.from the Manufacturer list, select HP, and then under Printers list select Deskjet 6980" , then Click next and complete the wizard

Now try printing . It should work.

Re: Can't install Deskjet D4160 on Windows 8 upgrade

Hello,

In your earlier post ( the first one ) you had mentioned the below  ..

When it gets to that point I plug in the USB and the printer is detected.  The progress bar gets halfway and then stops.  If hangs there for awhile and then an X appears.  The install program continues to run and then times out.

When the progress bar is half the way and stays there for a while , you need to go to Device Manager , where you'd find Yellow bang entries for the printer, right click on each of them and click on UPDATE DRIVER SOFTWARE , then browse to the location where the Downloaded software was extracted ( generally it will be in TEMP folder   "%temp%" ) . Do the same for  untill you update the driver software for all the YELLOW entries for the printer in Device Manger.

Re: Can't install Deskjet D4160 on Windows 8 upgrade

I tried that and the driver you suggested was not listed.  I tried another and my printer reacted.  At least that was something.

I will try your nest post.
