Operating system: Windows XP
Issue: HP Director window does not open anymore.
History: It used to work fine.
This HP page outlines the problem (and solution), which apparently is with Internet Explorer 7. (I currently use IE8)
I uninstalled and reinstalled the software, then tried both these solutions, and neither has worked;
Download and install the Critical update to resolve an issue with HP Director after installing Internet Explorer 7 to resolve this issue. Follow these steps exactly to download the HP Director update.
Follow these steps to use a workaround to open HP Director each time you use the program. If you use this workaround instead of the critical update, you must repeat these steps each time you use HP Director.
It occurs to me that one solution may be to uninstall IE if that is the conflict, however, that seems to be a last option.

You can get the replacement version of HP Director by downloading and installing the Full Feature Software for your printer. The new software is part of the Full Feature Software; it is called The Solution Center.

Thank you for solving the problem for me. Of course, it is a workaround, as Director still doesn't appear, but it enables me to do what I wanted, which is OCR scanning, so problem solved.
