HP Printing Assistant will not work properly

[ Edited ]

I am running Windows Vista 32 Bit.

I just bought a HP Deskjet 3520. It can print alright through MS Word but I cannot scan without the printing assistant. Whenever I try and open it, it get an error message

C:\ProgramData\HP\HP Deskjet 3520 series\HPUDC\HP Deskjet 3520 series\UDC_install.json

C:\ProgramData\HP\HP Deskjet 3520 series\HPUDC\HP Deskjet 3520 series\UDC_device_2.json

clicking ok then gives me this error message:

C:\ProgramData\HP\HP Deskjet 3520 series\HPUDC\HP Deskjet 3520 series\UDC_install.json

C:\ProgramData\HP\HP Deskjet 3520 series\HPUDC\HP Deskjet 3520 series\UDC_device_2.json

C:\ProgramData\HP\HP Deskjet 3520 series\HPUDC\HP Deskjet 3520 series\UDC_device_2.json

clicking ok then opens to the interface but its blank with the sentance "string not found".

I've used the CD drivers that came with it, as well as trying to use the drivers downloaded from the website, but nothing works.

Anything that can be done?

Re: HP Printing Assistant will not work properly

Hi,

Please perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

  1. Go to “C:\Program Files\HP\<Printer Model>\Bin\UDC_Files” folder
  2. Look for “localize_1033.json” file and rename it to “localize_1033.json.old”
  3. Look for “tasks.json” file and rename it to “tasks.json.old”
  4. Go to Driver CD or Install Location (whichever is the latest)
  5. Look for Full_x86.cab or Full_x64.cab (OS Dependent – {64bit OS select Full_x64} {32bit OS select Full_x86 })
  6. Open the CAB File
  7. Look for “UDC_Files_localize_1033” and “UDC_Files_tasks”
  8. Extract the file to “C:\Program Files\HP\<Printer Model>\Bin\UDC_Files”
  9. Rename the “UDC_Files_localize_1033” to “localize_1033.json”
  10. Rename the “UDC_Files_tasks” to “tasks.json”
  11. Go to “C:\ProgramData\HP\<Printer Model>”
  12. Look for “HPUDC” folder and rename it to “HPUDC_1”
  13. Close all Windows
  14. Make sure the printer is Online
  15. Open HP Printer Assistant and check

Re: HP Printing Assistant will not work properly

I am having trouble with step 4. I don't really know the install location and don't know how to find it. Doing a computer search for Full_x64.cab didn't find anything.

I also have problems with step 12. I go to the directory in step 11 but I cannot see any folder named HPUDC. The only things I see are Help folder, Installer folder, Setupguide folder, XmLfileCache folder and notepad file called {5C2ECF15-B7FF-4E0E-9D00-2000354BD9C2}.

Re: HP Printing Assistant will not work properly

I tried the instructions on the link.

When i download the autmatic patch, I click run, but nothing happens. It says it extracts but then nothing happens.

So i tried the manual fix and again, that does not fix the issue. It says the new values have been added to the regesitry, but this does not fix the issue.

To be clear, I don't know if this is a script probelm or not, as the error messages look nothing like the examples given in the link. I don't know how clear it will come out, but i added some screenshots in the order that things happen. (I added the boxs around toolbar and start menu for privacy).

Re: HP Printing Assistant will not work properly

Hi,

The step 4) Go to Driver CD or Install Location (whichever is the latest), refers to cd shipped with the printer or if you have downloaded the software.

If CD is available insert the same and check for the folder.

If downloaded go to Start > click Run> type %temp% > press enter. Check for folder starting with 7z name open and you should find the folder mentioned above.

Re: HP Printing Assistant will not work properly

Thanks for the info about step 4. I managed to find the files u talked about and copied them in.

However I still cant find the file mentioned in step 12. I go to C:\ProgramData\HP\<Printer Model> location and there is no HPUDC file. The only things I see are Help folder, Installer folder, Setupguide folder, XmLfileCache folder and a notepad file called {5C2ECF15-B7FF-4E0E-9D00-2000354BD9C2}.

Re: HP Printing Assistant will not work properly

Yep, I tried to open it but get the exact same response. I notice the error message im getting has the HPUDC file as part of the directory location it tells me about. Could that be related somehow?
