HP officejet 4215 and windows 7 64-bit

I just bought a new computer pre-installed with Windows 7. Now it doesnt work with my printer HP officejet 4215. When I plug in the printer to the USB port, it tries to install the driver. But the driver installation fails.

I tried updating the driver but that also failed. Is there anything I need to do to make the printer work with Windows 7?

Re: HP officejet 4215 and windows 7 64-bit

Hi pcwizard,

I followed the steps in the document.

The installation failed so I tried the manual installation (Add printer).

But I cannot find the printer "HP officejet 4200 series" under manufacturer HP.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Hi cjc123,

What error messages are you getting?

Have you tried using a new USB cable and Port on the computer?

Re: HP officejet 4215 and windows 7 64-bit

Hi pcwizard,

I have another computer running XP and I can use the same cable to connect to the computer. I also tried another USB port on the new computer.

Let me explain the steps I took

a) I followed the link you gave me http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01796879. The driver installation failed.

b) Then I followed the link "Windows 7 Update Failed to Install the Driver" http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01796879

While doing Step 4 in the above link. I did the following

Step four: Manually install the driver

1. Make sure that the USB cable is not connected to the product. If the USB cable is connected to the product, disconnect it.

 2. From the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Devices and Printers . The Devices and Printers window opens.

3. Click Add a printer . The Add Printer window opens.

4. Click Add a local printer .

5. Click Use an existing port .

6. Click the Use an existing port drop-down list, select LPT1: (Printer Port) , and then click Next .

7. Click the Windows Update button and wait for the updates to complete.

8. In the Install the printer driver window, under Manufacturer click HP , and then search for your driver under Printers

The problem is: I cannot find the printer "HP officejet 4200 series" under manufacturer HP

1) Can I use another driver like the 4300 series?

Thanks

Re: HP officejet 4215 and windows 7 64-bit

Hi cjc123,

Re-run the windows updates from Add printers. When I ran this on my computer I show that there is a driver for the Officejet 4200. Let me know what you find out?

[ Edited ]

cjc123,

I just encountered the exact same problem you did.  Device installation failed, I couldn't fix it by having Windows look for the updated driver (it kept reporting there was no driver), and I couldn't manually install one.  The problem turned out to be that the Windows Update service was not running on my computer.

Start->Administrative Tools->Component Services->Services(Local) then scroll down to find the Windows Update service.  This was disabled out of the box as part of my company's policy, so I set it to Manual and started the service just to fix the problem.

Once the service is started, go back to the Devices and Printers dialog and troubleshoot the device again.  It should then find and install the driver.

I hope this helps!

Dave
