This "jam" happens on EVERY FAX (about 5 a year, now-a-days). Now I know what to check for, but don't know why it keeps popping up. The ONLY thing I like about this machine is the auto-feeder for scanning.

thanks this was very helpful.. actually for me a piece of paper was stuck so I used the suggestion you gave. Opened the side door for the printer head, pushed the carriage and found the piece of paper that was messing up.

He had to pull it fairly hard, I remember he said "Not sure if this is gonna work, if it breaks...well, it was broken anyway." Hope this helps.
I hope HP is reviewing these forums and will make the products better in the future. Is that piece really necessary?

That's good, I'm glad you got it fixed. Nothing worse than having a fine piece of machinery that doesn't work proper. To this date, I have not had any more problems, and she works like a charm.

mine hits the tube that transport the ink from the cartridge to the carriage. the guide broke the first time and now the tubes will get in the way every once in a while.

OK guys, I've been surfing the net now for best part of 3 or so months listening and watching peoples problems with the HP Officejet Pro 8500. I've just only come across this forum. I purchased my printer new from 'Office Works' Bundoora in April 2010. Since pulling it out of the box...I've had nothing but trouble. I'm glad HP actually provide this forum as it gives me the chance to bag the crap out of them and thier **bleep** customer service. Even when your printer has only printed a maximum of say 30 pages in 12 months and has spent more time than none saying "Paper Jam" or "Carriage Jam" and spending literally hours checking out the printer as per instructions and finding nothing wrong. I should have brought the printer back but each time a fault came up..I just grinned and beared it. I kept thinking that it will run correct one day and there were days when it ran good and I thought "Yes..it's fixed". This was only short lived til the next "Carriage Jam" came up again. I actually wrote a letter to HP and informed them of the problem. I told them that unless they could help me, HP Office Jet Pro 8500 909a was going to be used as a boat anchor. That didn't stop them from replying with "We're so sorry sir but your HP product is out of warranty and we can't help you - Directing me to some **bleep**ty help page" So I wrote back with "Which bay should I fish in and what is the best bait for whiting" They replied with "Your question has been answered and please do not reply again"
Well it almost become a boat anchor until a few weeks ago when i was playing around with it. Everyone is right in relation to the Carriage won't move from the right hand corner. It just remains stuck. I got a torch and checked the area out and couldn't find anything that the carriage was sticking to. I was seriously thinking about taking a hammer to it (The whole unit) and I really didn't care whether I damaged it or not. I was able to slide that carriage inspection plate back which made it easier to see everything. So a few weeks ago I grabbed hold of the carriage and forced it back towards the left hand side. Something went "Twingg and Bang" and it sounded like something snapped. I'm not sure but i reckon it's the same part you have pictured. Well blow me down...it hasn't stopped since. I'm a little sick of how long it takes to warm up and consistantly does Cartridge cleans..but I'll put up with that for a short time. So yes Mr HP..you have a **bleep** product and your customer service is terrible. I've since fixed the problem by forcing the carriage back to the left hand side. I shouldn't have to do this with a not very old printer. No more HP products for me..this will be my last!

I forced the carriage to the left and heard a snap as well. My printer was on at the time, however, as i could not get it to shut off without unplugging it. perhaps i should have unplugged, as now the printer won't turn on at all. Suggestions? I kind of like the anchor idea, but i don't have a boat...

OK, I can't help you with your technical question in relation to trying to get your printer to fire up. Maybe try plugging it in and trying to turn it on. Maybe unplugging it and leaving it for 15 minutes and then try to re-start. But at this stage if all else fails then you've got a HP product that doesn't work. Don't know about you but I paid something like $420 + for my printer. So mine is running OK...for now! But you might want to ask me what I would do if it fails again. I've done some research and found out that the HP8500 all in one has 26,787 individual parts. That's separating all screws, clips, gears, wiring, panels, doors, globes, buttons, connectors. I think you get the drift. I would then purchase 26,000 envelopes or boxes. I would place each individual part into those envelopes and place the head office address for HP in your capital city. I would mark the envelopes "URGENT PRIORITY HP SPARE PARTS" and I would send them mail collect. (They pay) I think after about 5,000 parcels...HP bosses might get the drift.

I AM ALONG WITH 100's OF PEOPLE ON THESE FORUMS WANT ANSWERS. WE WANT ASSISTANCE OR OUR MONEY BACK. NOT BLEEP THAT MOST OF YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE ADVISORS GIVE US WHEN WE RING OR WRITE. I MAKE THIS AND THAT OF MY CHILDREN'S PROMISE. THIS IS MY LAST HP PRODUCT

Miraculously, the printer has now come on, but it is still jammed. i think it is the loose piece that i broke that is jamming it, but i haven't had time to dig inside the printer to see if i can find the little bugger and get it out. If i can't get it, i buy something else...
