I have a HP Laserjet 1100 that is still going strong. None of my current laptops have a parallel port connection. They all have just USB ports. So I decided to go ahead and purchase a parallel port print server

(StarTech.com 1 Port 10/100 Mbps Parallel Network Print Server (PM1115P)

http://tinyurl.com/6ct36xf

from Amazon to connect the printer directly to my home network.

It arrived today and I discovered that the print server's parallel port is different from the one on the LJ 1100, which is much smaller.  So the printer's connection port must not be a parallel port as I had thought.

So, I will need to return it to Amazon. My question is: what kind of port does the 1100 have if it is not a parallel port? What kind of printer server do I need to connect it to the network?

Thank you.

Correction:

I need a male (HP) mini parallel to female centronic parallel converter.

This may be the correct one.

I'll check it out.

Discovered that the port on the Laserjet is a parallel port but a Parallel - IEEE 1284 (EPP/ECP) - 36 pin mini-Centronics which is apparently different that the parallel port on the StarTech.com Parallel Network Print Server I purchased.

Any siuggestions for a network print server that would work with the LJ 1100?

Thanks.

Hi Anderson2244,

I think I have found a printer cable which will resolve your issue. Please check out the link below to see if this will fix your issue.

Mirus USB to Parallel Adapter (Centronic 36-Pin)

Kmart Item# 018V001641897000 | Model# SEAAP1305-BG Product

Description The USB to Parallel Bi-Directional Cable allows your PC to be connected to most parallel printer device through an available USB port. Just plug the USB connector of the cable into the USB port of your PC and the other end into the Centronics connector of the parallel printer and it's ready to use. The device's USB interface provides up to 12Mbps data throughput, so printing is much faster compared with standard parallel port (150kbs) connection. The USB-to-Parallel cable also features bi-directional communication, allowing the computer to correctly retrieve the message reported from the printer.

Thanks. I gave you a kudos for answering.:smileyhappy:

Unfortunately it is not what I need. I've since discovered that the parralel port on the HP Laserjet 1100 printer is a "mini-parallel" port used by HP on its older printers. So what I need is a female (HP) mini parallel to female centronic parallel converter or cable.

I'll keep looking.

I tried buying several things that never worked.  Finally, I just bought a cord to connect from the LaserJet 1100 printer cord to USB.  It is called a DB25 male to USB.  It was $4.97 off newegg.com with free shipping.  The item number is 12-339--143.  I have tried it, and it shows up in the PC now as an LPT port, but now I am stumped getting the driver.  Let me know if you can help on the drivers.
