I found this with my all in one printer c7280. Seems to be due to it not being a postscript printer and my Photoshop Elements 7 struggles. Have fixed temporarily by loading none existent post script printer (I used a Canon one) and selecting this as default printer. Photoshop seemed to work OK but when printing had to select my actual printer (It slowed down again here). I now tend to edit and print outside Photoshop using Windows media gallery or similar.
I have been waiting for either HP or Adobe to work this out and issue a fix. Still waiting !!

I have the same problem with my J6410 printer and Photoshop 5. In addition, I uninstalled Photoshop and then tried to reinstall, but the installation wouldn't run either.
Then I uninstalled the HP software, and partway through that process the Photoshop installation picked up again!
Since then I've tried adding a pdf printer and making it default, but Photoshop will still not run if the HP software is loaded. I've tried installing in a different order, but nothing seems to make these two work together.
Currently I'm having to prepare my documents, then network them to our other computer to open and print - but this doesn't work for Photoshop as I only have a single licence.
If anyone has a solution, please, please, post it here!
