C7280 Not Printing, Monitor Software Not Connecting (Solved)

Printer: C7280 All in One

Connection: Plugged into wireless Linksys router

Computers:

Toshiba Laptop XP SP3 Home
HP Desktop XP Home SP3

Issue:

My brother called me to fix his computers as they would not print. HP Printer Monitor software was unresponsive and could not interact with printer. I suspect this happened after a Microsoft update (not SP3, a weekly update in January). Power cycling router, printer and computers did not fix the issue. Neither computer could print unless the printer IP address was hard coded into the computer and printing was done not through printer software but through Windows using Notepad.

Fix:

I attempted a software update check through the HP software update utility but it showed that there were no new drivers/software. This was not the case. I found and downloaded version 10 of the bundled printer software on the HP website. The 2 computers were running version 9 of the suite. After I uninstalled the old software and installed the new, everything worked smoothly. By the way, try to figure out what is printer related software in Add/Remove Programs on an HP computer... argh...

Comment:

The printer is great but the software is terrible. The printer software was often preventing the shut down of a computer with a DeviceIONotification error popup. Sometimes the only way around was through task manager or to hold the power button on the computer. It seems that the printer wants to be on when the computer is shut down. The problem may have been resolved by itself if the HP Update utility recognized outdated software.
