Desk jet 1000-j110 reinstall problem

After HD problem and reformat my desk jet 1000-J110 will not install properly in Windows XP. Install goes without hitch but when you click on desktop icon it asks to connect printer with usb or continue without connecting. Does not go to app with Action or printer maintenance. Acts as if printer not connected yet.(?) Windows recognizes printer on power up and am able to print docs
without problem. Printer is confirmes as default and ready. Unable to perform any maintenance apps. Have fully uninstalled HP software and tried to reinstall from disk and HP download center software both basic and full versions 4xs with same result. First
install was perfect. Any attempt to install on any other HD ends with same result. Have never had an issue with any other brand of
printer I have owned doing this. Also no error messages.
