Deskjet 1120c driver in Windows 7 x64 [ Edited ]

Thanks for the help.

The post to which you refer may work for a USB connected printer, but the 1120c that I have is parallel.  I have tried the method in the post, referencing LPT1, and also using a parallel to USB adapter.  In either case I could not get it to work.  Any further suggestions?

Add the printer in Windows 7 as follows:  go to the Devices and Printers folder, Add a Printer, Local Printer, LPT1:, select Windows Update then install the Deskjet 1120c printer.

You answered this a while ago, but I missed the response.  I had tried that route before, but just tried again.  Again with no success.  The install seems to go as expected, but when i try to print a test page, I get a printer error.

I have the printer connected via a parallel card I added to my computer.  Should I be trying to connect via a USB to Parallel converter?  If I should be using the parallel card, is there any way of telling if it is really working?  I have no other parallel devices to try it with.  I had heard that Win 7 does not recognize parallel connected devices.

The parallel card would be the best choice, USB to parallel converters can be problematic.  Make sure you are selecting the proper LPT port, you can go to the Device Manager and see which parallel port you have.  This would typically be LPT1: but the card may default to a different port.  You can open the Device Manager by clicking on the Start Orb and type device manager in the Start Search box.  My system does not have an LPT port, but it would show up in the Ports section.  Check there to see the proper port number and also make sure there is not a yellow triangle in the LPT port indicating an error.

Bad news.  In spite of the fact that I had added a parallel port, no ports show up on the device manager.  I will have to solve this one first.  Any hints?

In another thread you mentioned that you have tried with a USB-parallel converter as well.  With the USB converter the port name may be USB001: or some similar.  You would go to the Devices and Printers folder, right click on the DJ 1120, select Printer Properties, Ports and check the port settings.

You should also check that the printer works by itself.  Disconnect the USB-parallel converter and plug the printer in and turn it on.  With the printer on press and hold the power button, then press the resume button five times, then release the power button.  Does the printer properly print a test page?

The parallel port may require a driver for proper operation, check any documentation that came with the card (or search for details).  Our responses to this thread crossed, you might also check my later post (earlier today) that discusses the USB converter you mentioned in another thread.

Bob you are brilliant.  I have an 1120C that I was trying to connect to across my network.   It is on another computer running 32 bit Windows XP because it is a parallel port printer.  It refused to install on my Windows 7 64 bit computer because it couldn't find the drivers. 

Thanks to your advice....I installed the printer successfully as a local printer on my Windows 7 computer (even though it wasn't actually connected to it).   Doing that installed the drivers on the computer so I could then install the actual printer across the network and make it work.  Then I just deleted the local printer I had installed.

Without your advice in this post about clicking the Windows Update button to download more drivers (Deskjet 1120C wasn't listed at first.)  I would still not be printing.

I am not so lucky. My company has modified the dialog box features and I don't have the Windows Update button shown on the example above (with the blue arrows).

Not sure if there is a driver out there that I can add to my laptop, then install manually?

Windows Update is the easy way, the more involved method is as follows:

1. Open this link in Internet Explorer (other browsers are not supported) 
2. Download the 11.6Mb file which is the x64 version of the driver.
3. Open a DOS prompt and then navigate to the directory where you saved the driver file.
4. Type the following in the DOS prompt:   expand  *.cab   -f:*  .\
5. Now go to Start, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, select LPT1: temporarily, then say "have disc" and browse to the directory where you expanded the cab file.   Select the Deskjet 1120C and continue with the installation.  When the install gets near the end "cancel" the installation.  This will leave the driver in place, then you could use the plug-n-play installation previously described to install the driver by connecting the USB cable.

If your company has turned off the capability for Windows Update it is also possible the policies will not allow you to install the driver as described above.  In this case you may need to enlist the cooperation of the IT folks to install the driver.  If you have an account on the laptop with Administrative capability the above should work.
