Gibberish & blank pages, Can't turn off

Every few weeks, my Officejet Pro L7590 prints only half a page, then starts spitting out pages with one line of gibberish on them.  I have to uninstall the software and reinstall it to make it work again, but it only last for a couple of weeks before it starts doing it again.  The printer is 4-5 years old, and recently a friend downloaded updated drivers for it, but that didn't fix it.  It worked for a few weeks, and now is printing half pages again.  Can somebody please help me?  Also, I can't turn the thing off.  The 'OFF' button just blinks and the window says "SHUTTING DOWN" forever, and I have to unplug it to get it to power off.

Hey there. You didnt not state what operating system you are using. If your using Windows I would recommend running the HP Print & Scan Doctor
