I've had an HP Deskjet 1000 printer for a few months and I just noticed today that I cannot change the print quality in the settings. I uninstalled the driver, downloaded the full driver package and reinstalled, but I'm still having the same problem. When I go into the printer settings and try to adjust the resolution via the dropdown, it says the resolution settings are informational only and cannot be changed.
It's working fine otherwise but naturally this is a problem. Someone claimed in another thread about the same thing that it's an intentional change to the software to force people to burn through ink more quickly. Is there any truth to that? What can I do to change this setting?
Currently running Windows 7 64-bit, by the way, and have had no other problems with either hardware or software. Thanks in advance.

Hi Malygris,
At the time this driver was made, this was by design. Try doing an “Add a printer” from the printers folder, and install the Deskjet 990c driver. This should give you more flexibility / options with the print quality settings. Have a wonderful day.
Follow the instructions below:
1. Open devices and printer
2. Click Add a printer
3. Click Add a local printer
4. From the Use existing port select the USB option, and then click next
5. Click on the Windows Update button to get all support window 7 drivers updated
6. Once update is finished. Click on HP from left menu, and then select the Deskjet 990c from the right menu, and then click next.
7. Follow the remaining instructions to complete the installation.
Once you have the 990c printer added make sure it is the default printer, and then try printing to your Deskjet 1050 printer using this driver.

With my printer, when I go to the printer properties, the options for draft or best quality are not able to be clicked on. I have many draft quality papers that I need to print for my students. How can I change this?

Hi KijanaMsafi,
Need to make sure that the Deskjet 990c driver is set to default. When you are printing from the application program you will need to access the Print Preferences to change to the Draft mode printing.

I have Hp Deskjet 1000 printer, same case. I need to print in a draft mode, and I did exatcly what you told me to update driver to 990c. After instalation is done and set it on default, I tried to print using 990c driver. it said that "error". So I still cant use the driver. What sould I do? and I still have deskjet 1000 driver installed. or maybe should I uninstalled that driver first.
I really need an answer, Thank you.

Hi maulidin,
Have you tried using a new USB cable or USB port on the computer?
Do you have a USB hub between the printer and computer?
We need to verify if the printer is working or you are having a communication problem between the printer and computer. The easiest way to verify this would be to install the printer on a different computer, and see if you are able to print. If you are not able to print to the printer when installed on another computer it is possible that the printer is having a hardware failure. Let me know what you find out?
