I would like to provide weblink to download and install "Scan Diagnostic Utility" for your printer which will diagnoise the settings and tries to fix most of scanning issue.
This would be helpfull for you. Please make sure that USB cable is connected properly.
HP Scan Diagnostic Utility is created to diagnose and fix scan related issues with HP All-in-One devices
Below the HP website link:

--
If the webpage link does not read "Scan Diagnostic Utility" then, I request you to copy the link from "http://" till the end "lang=en" and paste in the internet browser and press "Enter"
Scroll down the webpage and in option 3 we have the 'Download Only' button. Click on "Download only" button in that page. When prompted, click Save and save it to the desktop of the computer.
Download and install the HP Scan Diagnostic Utility to the desktop and double click it.
After downloading the file, we need to run the file " Scan Diagnostic Utility_ver_1.5" to install the utlity.
After few seconds, below screen will be displayed along with HP Scan Diagnostic Utility will appear on the desktop.
Double click on "HP Scan Diagnostic Utility" icon and select the printer.
After running the utility, we need to select the All-in-one from drop down list, then we need to select "Diagnose" option.
After running the utility, we need to select the All-in-one (if multiple Printers are installed, we need to select appropriate one) and we need to select "Diagnose" option.
If an error condition is identified with any of these components, a Red 'X' displays next to the item. If there are any Red X marks, click on Fix button.
If there is no error condition, a 'Green' check mark displays next to the item. The utility is equipped with a FIX button to correct the error conditions. If there are any Red X marks, click on Fix button.
Then you will receive dialog box with green and red checkmarks. If there are any RED X marks , we can select "FIX" option. And all red checkmarks should change to green checkmarks.
HP All-in-One, Deskjet, and Photosmart Printers - Fix Button Is Not Highlighted on the Print Diagnostic Utility
