HP Officejet 6500 E709

When installing the drivers for the above noted 4 in 1 on an older HP 3800+ media center computer running on windows XP, the installation seems to work fine and the printer recognizes the input from the computer on a wireless basis.  However, everytime the computer it booted up the following message appears./

Cannot Install this Hardware.  There was a problem installing this hardware HP Officejet 6500 E 709N Series

An error occured during the installation of the device.  The specified port is unknown.

How can I remove this message from popping up every time I boot the computer.

Re: HP Officejet 6500 E709

I have the same problem and it looks like it is because the network connection from my laptop to the network is not established yet. Once it is set up, it all works fine, but it is a pain. Are you using a static IP address for your printer?

Re: HP Officejet 6500 E709

Hi,

Have you guys tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software? It is possible that there is a component that just did not get installed properly the first time and is causing this problem during startup.

Re: HP Officejet 6500 E709

I can only speak for myself, but yes, I completely removed the HP software, downloaded

the latest and reinstalled it. Interestingly enough, even though I receive the message indicating

that the hardware can't be installed (Cannot Install this Hardware.  There was a problem installing this hardware HP Officejet 6500 E 709N Series An error occured during the installation of the device.  The specified port is unknown.) the printer and scanner work fine after startup is complete.

Since the printer is wireless and not physically connected to my laptop and I have only wireless acess with

my laptop, I'm not sure why Windows continues to 'find the hardware' to be installed. By the way, the

printer uses a static IP and I do not see this issue on a hardwired desktop.

Re: HP Officejet 6500 E709

Hi,

Open Device Manager (Click Start->Run->type devmgmt.msc and press enter) and check if there are any devices with a yellow question mark. This signifies a failed device driver installation. If you find any that has the HP 6500 label right click on it and remove or uninstall. Click Action on top portion of the window and then Scan for new hardware. Hopefully it does not find it or if it did hopefully it  installs properly this time.

Re: HP Officejet 6500 E709

First, thanks for you reply and concern. I appreciate any advice that may help solve this issue.

Strangely enough, the printer and scanner work fine, it's just that I get the error every time that I boot.

When I look at the Device Manager, there are no warnings (no yellow flags). When I run MSIFO32, click Components, Problem Devices it says that I need to reinstall the driver, even thought it all works well, once I get past the startup.  As a result, I am running the driver that I downloaded from HP.com...OJ6500VE709_Full_14.exe. I am using this to uninstall the driver and will restart and reinstall. After I complete, I will let you know if it fixes the problem or not.

Re: HP Officejet 6500 E709

First, I have uninstalled everything related to HP and it still prompts to try to install the printer that

'it found.' Now, however, Windows asks that I insert a CD name PDL_Common...not sure where I am supposed to get that, but the CD that came with the system does not help.

I have:

1) Removed all HP software

2) No printers are shown in Device Manager

3) When this runs, it runs twice (maybe once for the printer and once for the scanner?)

4) Deleted the printer

5) Turned off radio

6) Disabled all elements in MSCONFIG

7) Turned off monitoring thinking that might restore what I removed.

Nothing works. I am not sure what file still shows the printer, but really don't want to mess with WIndows

files, folders or registers....

BTW, when I try to run set up using the earlier mentioned latest download or using the original CD, there

always HP files that are required that can't be found.

Examples:

hpwj65n3.gpd

hpfse6dt.dtd

At this point, I'd like to just get it completely off my system and start from scratch.

Any other ideas?

Re: HP Officejet 6500 E709

I was finally able to find a delete problem drivers. I had to go to the Device Manager and select View Hidden...there were two printers with the flags. I deleted and the problem is gone. Now I want reinstall

the printer in a wireless mode, but the install software is very cumbersome to say the least. I had set the

printer IP address to a Static setting so that it would not drop the link over time. I can see the printer and use my browser to connect to it and do all the admin things, but when I try to install it via 802.11, I see all the right stuff until it fails and says 'The gateway IP address 0.0.0.0 of the printer does not match your router. Reconfigure the setting on your printer.

I found a suggestion on another forum page:

Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
- Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
- Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
- On this screen you want to set a Manual IP.  Enter the current IP address.
- Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
- Leave the gateway and DNS blank.  This should take care of the error you are getting.

- Click 'Apply'

Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.

After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

1) The printer was already setup that way.

2) I did all the rest and nothing changed...I still be the message.

The gateway IP address 0.0.0.0 of the printer does not match your router.  Reconfigure the setting on your printer to match.

Re: HP Officejet 6500 E709

It appears as though, I have to set the IP address of the printer the automatic (which really neat, since kills anyone else having access to it), finish installing, then set it back to a Static IP. It would appear that the

downloaded software has a bug, since it does detect the correct Static IP address and I can access it. Why you

fail on install is unclear, but it sure isn't pretty.
