HP j4580 only prints self diagnosic page

I have a j4580 all-in-one printer connected to my Vista x64 computer but the strange thing is that it only prints the self-diagnostic page (from the solution center) or the alignment page and nothing else. Word documents, for example, go through the printer queue and I get no error messages but the printer doesn't start.

 

i've tried downloading and installing the latest drivers, I've tried using the drivers that automatically install, I've tried removing and reinstalling...

 

Is there a solution for this?
