How to Fix Disappearing Scans

[ Edited ]

We are getting lots of questions about scanned files disappearing or not being written to where they are expected to be.

HP have created a fix for this problem

Download Patch

Thanks, if you have any problems please report them to the forums so we can try to help you out.

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

Can you please further explain?  How does one save this file workaround to the computer?

I clicked the link, but the file won't open, and I don't know how to complete the process you describe to fix the problem.

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

maggiesfam,

You might have to type the ftp link in your internet browser. It should show you a list of files that can be downloaded.  Sometime you have to right-click and do a save target as...

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

My computer won't permit me to save the new file over (replace) the existing file. Should I save it as something else, and if so, what?

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

The best way is to rename the existing file and then download the new file.  You might have to close your HP software in order to rename the file.

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

At the risk of sounding really inept, I'd request a step-by-step explanation of how to fix the disappearing scan problem. If you could start at the very beginning (with the link to the ftp file), I'd be so grateful!

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

Hi Maggie,

I'll give it a shot (this is for 32-bit, if you are using a 64-bit system then the let me know):

  1. Open windows explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin
  2. Locate the file hpqxmlul.dll
  3. Right click on the file and select "Rename" in the drop down list,
  4. press the end button,
  5. type .orig and then press return
  6. Click on the link ftp://noscnfil:update2@hprc.external.hp.com/
  7. You should see the filename - hpqxmlul.dll
  8. click on the filename
  9. select save file and click the ok button
  10. now you should get a dialog asking you where to save the file
  11. in the dialog browse to C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin
  12. click save

That should do it.  You may run into a problem with step 10 depending on how your browser is set up.  It may be setup to default to a certain download location.  Let me know what step is problematic and we can go from there.

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

I have a 64 bit system and tried the instructions twice.  It did not solve the problem.  Any other thoughts?

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

The instructions for 64 bit are the similar except use Program Files (x86) instead of Program Files as follows:

  1. Open windows explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\Digital Imaging\bin
  2. Locate the file hpqxmlul.dll
  3. Right click on the file and select "Rename" in the drop down list,
  4. press the end button, type .orig and then press return
  5. Click on the link ftp://noscnfil:update2@hprc.external.hp.com/
  6. You should see the filename - hpqxmlul.dll
  7. click on the filename
  8. select save file and click the ok button
  9. now you should get a dialog asking you where to save the file
  10. in the dialog browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\Digital Imaging\bin
  11. click save

If you had no problems following the above steps and it didn't fix your problem then your problem must be somewhere else.

Re: How to Fix Disappearing Scans

If you can tell me more about your problem I might be able to help.  Can you print?  Have you installed the full solution?  What device are you trying to scan with?  Can you scan with a program like Paint or the Windows Scanners and Cameras wizard?  Is your device connected through USB or is it on a network?  If it is on the network is it connected by ethernet or wireless?
