I cannot get the Firmware update to my OfficeJet Pro 8500 (A909a) to work.

I first downloaded the FW update 1006BR to replace the 842BR installed at the factory. (On Firefox I was given the option to download or cancel). After the download, I double clicked, the program self extracted, I got the box asking for permission to allow the program to run and I clicked OK. Then I got the box saying the program stopped working, I clicked on find a solution and then the program closed.

I then switched to IE9, it allowed me to run the program directly, but I had exactly the same results.

As per the instructions, the printer is directly connected to the network (always is) and the Windows Firewall was off.

Hi,

In order to deny any connectivity issue affecting the firmware utility, try to temporary connect your printer to your PC with USB. allow 1-2 minutes till the device been detected and a short installation should popup.

Once completing the device configuration, launch the Firmware Update again and check for any change.

I was thinking of trying that but did not want to mess up the network settings. I will try it though.

I connected the printer via USB. Windows installed the printer and I printed a test print.

I then went to the HP website and using IE9, ran the Firmware upgrade installation program. It downloaded, rand and crashed again. Clicking on find a solution, again gave nothing.

I then downloaded the FW upgrade installation program to my download folder and attempted it again, running it in Win7 by double clicking. Same results.

Current Firmware version is DLM1FN0842BR, the one that I am attempting to install is DLM1FN1006BR.

Have the same problem. Did the same as you, had the printer connected to the wired network. Was able to print from the wired network. Connected directly via usb cable. Same result, extracted the files and then crashed. Windows is looking for a solution, so am I.

Is HP monitoring this forum, since it is their forum? Could I please have a reply from HP,     Please.

Had the same results as rgreen. Did the same as you suggested. Dont know where to go from here. Could you please suggest.

I talked to tech support shortly after I made my posts and they only suggestion they had is that maybe the firware was not really for my specific model. I left it alone. It works ok, so I am leaving sleeping dogs lie.

This is very poor on the part of HP. I am sure I downloaded the correct firmware. It carced it immediatly after unpacking, so my guess is that there is something wrong with the software of theirs and not too many people are trying to upgrade the firmware.Sometime you get a good one on support. Not very often.

I recall that I should have done this a long time ago and I did not. Has problems with changing the default tray or something like that.

I am trying to get an old XT computer going to try and install the firm, cant get more plain vanilla than that.

Took me all day to get the old XP working. But, I had success in flashing the printer.

1. Installed the software from the original DVD that came with it. Had Norton antivirus and firewall turned off and installed the printer using USB.

Note: Win XP does not have User Access Control (UAE) and I did not think to turn this off during the unsuccessful flashing on the Win7 PC. If you are running an AV program, I would turn UAE off and disconnect my internet connection. You dont need it to flash the printer.

2. I updated the HP software via the HP solution centre. Open it and you should see a choice to update the software.When updating it tells you that it will fix a communication problem with the printer. Run it. I usually tick the box to "shut down the computer after completion". This way, I can walk away and if it has shut down, it usually has updated successfully. If it is still running and hangs then there is a problem. Make sure to print a test page from the printers property window. If it does, you know it can communicate after the update.

3. Flash the printer. It will happen as per the instructions from HP. I had the .exe on a usb stick and it did it from that.

Thank you for the update. I also have an old XP machine sitting in the closet. However, it was running fine when I set it aside. I will try your solution later this weekend.
