I have a Photosmart C7180 printer with the automatic duplexing attachement.
This hardware feature is recognized by the Windows XP and Vista drivers and
thus there is the option to do automatic duplexing in the preferences menu.
I downloaded the Windows 7 driver from HP's web site a week ago and am
disappointed to find out that I have lost this feature; only manual duplexing
is offered in the printer preferences. I already checked the "Printer Services"
menu and there is no "Configuration" tab where the Automatic Two-sided
Printer Module is expected to be found.

OK, I have stumbled upon the answer to my own question. In "Printer Preferences" under XP and Vista,
choosing "Features -> Printer Services" opens another window which is titled "HP Photosmart C7100
series Toolbox". The last of three tabs is called "Configuration" where the Automatic Two-Sided Printing
Module appears with a check box to enable/disable this feature. This "Configuration" tab is not present
in the Windows 7 version of the driver (13.1.0). Instead, one must go the the Windows Control Panel,
Devices and Printers, right-click on the appropriate printer, e.g., "HP Photosmart C7100 Series", and
choose "Printer properties". In the "Device Settings" tab, you will see the Duplex Unit as an installable
option. In my case, this option was listed as "Not Installed" even though it was attached to the printer.
Changing the status to "Installed" and applying the change caused the automatic duplex option to appear
in the "Printing preferences" menu. While in the "Device Settings" tab, you'll also want to enable the
Photo tray option for the appropriate size of photo paper.
