Officejet 7410 All-in-One install on new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit platform - help needed, please

Hi: I see many, many threads about problems w/HP software/drivers in the Win7 x64 environment. :-( The more I read, the more confused and worried I become that I will have installation (or more likely) operational issues with my new computer. Perhaps someone can point me to some concise, targeted information about issues, patches and other fixes. I currently connect my 7410 to my existing Vista desktop via USB; the PC is networked to a wireless router so that I can print wirelessly from my laptop. Everything works fine, even though I probably couldn't recreate the setup now from memory, if I tried. I installed the suitable HP software for the 7410 on my old WinXP box several times over the years, and I installed the Vista-compatible version on the current Vista desktop, as well about 1.5 years ago. I even managed to install the Windows 7-compatible version (13.1.0) from the HP CD on my laptop running Windows 7 Pro ***32-bit** a few months ago. But I need advice about how to proceed when the new desktop running Win7 Ultimate (**x64**) arrives to replace the Vista (x86) system. Questions: 1) Should I use the same "Windows 7" CD (version 13.1.0) purchased from HP 2 months ago and used for my Win7 32 laptop, or do I need a newer version? 2) Once installed, which of the apparently many patches will I need to fix the many known functionality issues for the HP software in the Win 7 64 environment? 3) I assume that the installation procedure itself will be essentially the same as before: power on the 7410, but do NOT connect the USB cable; install software on the computer; select the correct options for connections, fax setup, etc; THEN connect the USB cable? If someone could point me in the correct direction here, I would greatly appreciate your help. The 7410 is out of its extended warranty coverage and won't last forever, but it works fine now. Since I telecommute, I rely on my 7410 to work every day, so any advance planning and troubleshooting to avoid problems during the installation and setup would be most helpful. Thanks, Ronna

Re: Officejet 7410 All-in-One install on new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit platform - help needed, pleas

The 13.1.0 CD has both the 32 bit and 64 bit drivers for Windows 7.  I am running an Officejet 7410 on my home network with no problems from a Windows 7 x64 system (as well as  a few XP and Win 7 x32 systems).  I am using the full featured driver available for download from HP here, which appears to be the same version you would get on CD.  After installing the printer I suggest installing the critical update for scanning available from here.

Personally I would install the 7410 as a network device if your wireless router has an extra LAN port.  I do not know if scanning would be available on the Windows 7 machines if the printer is shared, but all the features are available from a 7410 connected directly to the network.  I set up my system with a fixed IP address rather than letting DCHP assign an address.

Re: Officejet 7410 All-in-One install on new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit platform - help needed, pleas

Hi, Bob:

Thanks very much for getting back to me.

Yes, I think the CD is the "full feature" package, based on what installed on my Win7 32 laptop 2 months ago (as opposed to the "basic drivers" preinstalled in Win7).

Glad to hear that it is working on your system. That's encouraging. :-)

Yes, I saw the patch about the disappearing scans.  I've already downloaded that patch, burned it to a CD for use on the new computer, and printed out the instructions. Thanks for the tip.

I'm pretty sure the router has an extra LAN port (you mean an ethernet port, right?).

Trouble is, I have no idea how to set it up as networked.  When I moved from my old XP desktop to the new Vista desktop ~1.5 years ago, I recall discussing it with the agent (I was still under extended warranty coverage and found my way to the dedicated Officejet All-In-One folks, in Canada I think?) whether to connect via USB or networked (via ethernet?).  Since everything worked the way I had it, I opted to recreate the same connections and hookups that had worked OK.  And it works fine as it is now, including the hookup to my digital answering machine.

I think I might even have the capability on the new computer to connect wirelessly to the 7410 (it has a WLAN PCIe card), as well as via USB and ethernet. So it looks as if I could do USB, OR ETHERNET, OR WIRELESS?

I still have the original printed setup guide for the 7410 (French version, too!).

I'm just not very techno-savvy, especially when it comes to hardware and peripherals.

Heck, I only marginally grasp the difference between "shared" and "network". :-(

Not sure how to do the fixed IP thing, either. Scaring up the necessary SSID and WEP/WPA passkey info for the router might be an issue, since I've been using this router for a while. :-(

So, without more detailed step-by-step instructions, I will probably set it all up exactly as it is now (wired via USB to the desktop, wireless via the router for the laptop), b/c I only need to print from these 2 computers and, most of all, I know it works, at least with the current VISTA desktop and Win7 laptop.

(I know that Win7 has all sorts of networking  "homegroup" functions, but I haven't tried them yet, since I only have the 1 Win7 machine at the moment.)

That said, I'd be open to instructions on how to do this. I suppose ethernet is probably faster than USB and networked may work better than "direct connect", so long as it does not compromise security.

Wireless seems more dicey in terms of setup and use, so I'd probably opt for ethernet, if I could figure out how.

Please advise.

Thanks!

Ronna

Re: Officejet 7410 All-in-One install on new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit platform - help needed, pleas

Hi, Bob (or anyone):

Any advice?

New computer arrives today.

I do have the original Setup Guide for the 7410 and an ethernet cable (as well as the existing USB cable on the current install to the Vista system).

My laptop works fine networked wirelessly to the 7410.

An even though the new system does have a wireless card, I prefer the reliability of a wired connection for the PC and the 7410.

So, the question remains whether to configure the new Win7 (64) desktop the same way I currently have the Vista (32) desktop set up (DIRECT CONNECTION, USB) or to switch to NETWORKED, ETHERNET.

I assume ethernet might be a bit faster and more reliable for data transfer than USB.

However, the USB connection has worked fine for years on the XP and Vista systems.

Is there any particular *advantage* to hooking up the new Win7 (64) as networked/wired over USB?

Any *disadvantage*, particularly from a security standpoint?

Thanks VERY, VERY much for your expert advice and assistance,

(Mods: feel free to move this thread to install/set-up, as I see that it's now drifted a bit off-topic from the original software/driver question.)

Re: Officejet 7410 All-in-One install on new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit platform - help needed, pleas

The main advantages of the network connection are as follows:

  •  The printer can be shared with multiple computers without a host computer being on.
  •  For Windows 7 where the ink levels may not be available from the toolbox the levels can be seen using the embedded web server of the printer.
There are not really disadvantages that I am aware of.  Security may depend on your network; on my home network there are no issues.  When I had an Officejet 7410 on the network at my desk when I worked at a rather large company it did print a test page and a spreadsheet one day.  It turned out that a user a floor above me had installed the printer, had the installer find it automatically and it found mine :-).
I have not used the wireless network,  I wire it directly through the wired LAN router and then print wirelessly from my laptop.

Re: Officejet 7410 All-in-One install on new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit platform - help needed, pleas

Hi, Bob: Well, I had a "near death" experience during the attempted network (wired) installation from the software CD last week. It was going fine and was in the final stages of configuration when I got an 0x887df78a error on the 7410 display screen (and all the indicator lights flashed), accompanied by a BLACK SCREEN (no BSOD, no stop code, no error message) on the computer display. Needless to say, I aborted the install at that point. I did recover the computer and finished the installation with the USB local connection, which went fine. Since then, I've updated the software and have been printing and copying fine. Can still print wirelessly from my laptop, as well. Fax test from the desktop went fine, but haven't had a chance to fax yet. Ditto on scanning. But I think it's all working OK. Not sure what happened (Googling the error code turned up several items at HP forums, on the internet) with the network connection. This was the first time with any install for the 7410 on multiple platforms that I had this sort of terror. A formal support request to HP was unhelpful, I'm afraid. The new desktop (but not the old one, which is currently disconnected from the 7410 and will be "retired" soon), my laptop and the 7410 are *all* wireless-capable. But I haven't had a chance to set up a Win 7 home group or to try to reconfigure the 7410 for a network connection to the new computer. Under the circumstances, I'm not sure I want to try. As long as the desktop works "local" and the laptop works "wireless", I'm pretty much OK. However, is there a way to change the setup from local (USB) to networked (wired), once everything is already up and running, without uninstalling and reinstalling the software? I would need to know the exact sequence of steps, esp when to disconnect the USB, when to connect the Ethernet, whether any settings need to be programmed in the 7410 menu display, etc. Thanks, ronna

Re: Officejet 7410 All-in-One install on new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit platform - help needed, pleas

Sorry to revive this old thread (and feel free to merge it with the one I just started...)

Had to restore the Win7/64 (OEM) desktop to factory image yesterday for unrelated problem.

Need now to reinstall HP software for "local" (wired, USB) connection.

Have both fresh, software download and CD (correct version for OS, preferred method).

Since it has taken me DAYS to get my computer restored and all my programs/data loaded, I really can't afford another system crash (BLACK DISPLAY or BSOD) or 7410 meltdown as happened last time (see above), at the end of the process.  "It just has to work"....

I think this has something to do with the network settings on the 7410 and/or in the printer menu on the PC, but I can't recall how it happened or (more importantly) how I fixed it.  There was some crucial step missing from the instructions....

For simplicity, I prefer to reinstall the way I know it worked (local, wired, USB), rather than networked.

Can someone PLEASE provide clear, step-by-step instructions to avert another install catastrophe???  THANKS!!!

Re: Officejet 7410 All-in-One install on new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit platform - help needed, pleas

HP Officejet 7410 software suite will not install or uninstall properly.

I was having network printer discovery problems with my HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One Printer on my new Windows 7 X64 Ultimate desktop computer with Intel I7 processor. After running HP downloaded tools with no success, I decided to uninstall the software, download the latest version and reinstall it. My HP printer software at that time was the latest and correct version and all patches and upgrades had been installed. All Windows 7 upgrades have been installed.

When reinstalling I received the following fatal error: “Fatal Error during installation. A later version of 64 bit HPCIO Components installer is already installed. Please go to HTTP://www.hp.com/support for troubleshooting information about “Fatal Error” and “msi.dot4wrp40”.

The installer program then tries to back out the installation and leave the system as it was before the software was run.

While this process is visibly occurring, the program stops and the following message is given:

“HP Installer Uninstaller has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.” A solution is delivered but it does not resolve the problem.

If you use the installer/scrubber software from HP web site to try to uninstall all HP software, you stop at the exact same points in the process with the same messages.

.

Any help in addressing this installation problem would be appreciated.
