I was foolish enough to purchase a new laptop today AND an HP Officejet Pro 8500. The software would not install on W7, there are no W7 downloads, and tech support just told me that it will be mid-Nov before HP gets around to taking care of the problem.

What exactly is it you cannot do?  Until the full featured drivers are available from HP you can install the drivers included with Win 7 (and written by HP).  Go to the Printers folder, Add Printer and select the Officejet Pro 8500 from the list.  If the 8500 does not show up in the list then click on "Windows Update" and wait a few minutes for the list to refresh.

Re: Officejet 8500 Win7 driver disk?

At this point, I'm a bit confused. Checking to see if a Win7 driver has been made available for the Officejet 8500 series shows that a Software & Drivers CD (Version 13.0.0) was made available earlier today

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=4063&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3752459

However, clicking the link to order the CD results in either a HTTP 500 error or a message that the product is invalid and that I must call HP to order the CD. Upon calling, I'm told that they can't locate any such references to a Win7 driver.

Is a new driver actually available?

I do not know specifically about the Officejet 8500, but the same happened yesterday AM with my Officejet 7410 (CD order link, no downloadable SW).  By the evening the page had been updated once again and the download drivers were available.  I downloaded and installed them and things are working fine for me.

I would suggest checking back frequently over the next few days.

Re: Windows 7 & Officejet Pro 8500

Been using Win7 since it was given to MSDN subscribers (about 2-3 months).

Micrsoft's Win7 64-bit Oficejet 8500 wireless drivers loses contact with the printer across a wireless network. No problems with the Vista box sitting 1 meter away from the Win7 box.

Solution Center is not available so we can not do all the "All in One" stuff. We did not buy a printer, but a multi function device. Scanning to a usb stick feels like 2001.

Vista Solution Center download does not install because it checks the OS version. Everybody was probably expecting HP to update the check and release the vista solution center download for Win7.

Currently, my OfficeJet 8500 wireless printer has gone from a great All to One, to less useful than my old Canon printer.

Coinsidering the warning that Microsoft gave on Win7, middle of November is embarressing for HP (especially since the fix is probably trivial + automated testing).

Re: Windows 7 & Officejet Pro 8500

Greetings

Thanks for your posts and apologies for your frustration here in the search for drivers.

I can confirm that 8500 series drivers are in queue should be accessible for download from hp.com shortly.

As you can imagine this is not a simple task in preparing for an OS release and developing 1000's of drivers to support millions of printers and customers. There are hundreds of engineering hours that have been invested in developing and delivering these drivers which we know are important for our customers.

On behalf of HP, we thank you for you patience in this situation and simply request to check back on the web in the coming days to download these drivers

Windows 7 driver for the 8500 is available, but it can't be downloaded?

[ Edited ]

Even worse, if the page to order doesn't work. And now, after spending a bunch of $$ for this printer, I'll have to pay shipping to get a driver?

REALLY? Is this the best solution you could come up with? The HP rep at Staples who sold me on this printer last week didn't believe me at first... he was red-faced and embarrased when he confirmed it. He told me to bring it back. Except they got my old printer.

I've built a PC for my son so he can do his homework undisturbed, and decided to wait for W7 to drop for the OS. Installed it last night and everything else works. But guess what? My Epson Photo printer works fine in 7.I guess it serves me right.

EDIT: The requirement is being a networked printer (he doesn't have a place in his room for a printer). Also, we have XP/OSX/W7 machines in the house, so the networked printer is a reasonable solution for every machine's printing requirements. Since freshman don't need to send faxes or even scan much, I found if you just browse the network, you can find the printer and W7 loads the driver accordingly. None of the other stuff is really needed.

I still think it's dumb that you can't download the disk though.

Re: Windows 7 & Officejet Pro 8500

Yes, they are available only for the non-wireless and non-premier model.  For the rest of us that actually paid more money to get a better product, those drivers are still (as of noon central time on Saturday) still not available.  this is seriously a joke and a huge black eye on HP's performance.

HP has had MONTHS to produce drivers for their products and if other hardware companies can do it, why can't HP??  There really is no excuse -- and HP should just say "Hey, we really f*cked up this time"

Re: Officejet 8500 Win7 driver disk?

The Drivers may be there to order on a disk?  But not for download for the 8500 all in one printer that many of us have paid good money for.  It is sad that

HP charges people for software that is for hardware that we purchased from them.  It is kind of extortion to own a printer and in order to use it with windows 7

have to buy a CD....    The fact is I would never have bought this current paper weight if I thought I was going to have to buy software to make it work as advertised.   The HP all in one Printer 8500 is a good Printer and I could understand charging for new firmware or software if it gave me newer and better features then I had with the 8500 on Vista but to charge for the same basic package just to get my printer to run on windows 7 sounds to me like HP doesnt stand behind their products and customers.   It's all about the Buck.

Re: Officejet 8500 Win7 driver disk?

They're not charging you for the software.  They simply don't have the software (drivers) ready.  For all of their software and support, you can either download it for free or order it on a disc for a charge.  This goes for laptops, printers, etc.  But, in this case, they just don't hvae it available at all yet.  Probably within the next couple of days.

They're not trying to extort you....calm yourself.

The drivers for the entire 8500 series have been available since earlier this morning. I downloaded the 64 bit full package for the 8500 wireless at approx 10 am Eastern and have been putting it through its paces. Thus far everything seems okay.
