Re: Re-installing software on XP computer for a Photo smart C4180 printer scanner copier

I took a screen shot of the error message + it points to my documents + the folder where I downloaded the install programme so I followed your advice but the secutity tab wasn't shown .... so I tried to followw that procedure ... However I am the only user on this computer + searced users + I think I allowed BOTH of them to access the security tab + modify it + then as it was getting on for 9 am I had to go to work,. I left the computer on autodownload ..... I started to install but cancelled it because during the removal process an automatic windows restore point was  created.... There was also an error message to say one of the required windows components was misiing

I've just checked + I can see security tabs on folders but theres no sign of downloaded installation programme

I'll update windows + try to find install programme

TY CD

Re: Re-installing software on XP computer for a Photo smart C4180 printer scanner copier

If you got a message saying missing Windows components, then Windows probably needs repaired. Once that is done, then try installing the printer. You may need to go back to an earlier restore point, or at the worst repair/reinstall Windows itself.

The Windows website (Microsoft) website can probably help with these procedures.

Re: Re-installing software on XP computer for a Photo smart C4180 printer scanner copier

Hmmmm. Well, the onlyu other things I can thing of would be these:

First, try downloading the drivers again. Don't use a download program, I have had those mess things up. I would try both the full feature and the basic drivers to see if either will install fully. If you don't need all the features, but just need print/scan try the basic as there is less to fail. They are both located here in the driver section:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=11416...

Second, put the downloads on the desktop just in case XP is having some sort of issue accessing their physical location. Also, when running them right click and run as administrator, just to make sure XP understands full access to all portions of the software installation.

Third, fully disable firewall/anti-virus/spyware/malware/security software.

Fourth, turn off any unneccessary programs running.

Fifth, if none of the above works, and it was my PC, I would run an invasive full blown virus scan on your entire system. Disk check, root kit detector, disk defragmenter. Anything I could think of to make sure my system is running properly. Installing a printer should not be this hard, which makes me think something is either blocking it, or something in the operating system is not right.

Re: Re-installing software on XP computer for a Photo smart C4180 printer scanner copier

I've downloaded the drivers from the HP website soooo many times the name assigned  to the      Temp\hp_webrelease_  folder  that contains a new Setup file got too long to be usable,   I have  deleted all of these folders but still get .... Error getting DriverVer from DAT file

SetupCopyOEMInf(X:\hpzid412.inf) failed error code OX5 Access is denied

SetupINFsListedInDatfile  failed with Access is denied

                                                   Exit Code = 5

I've just downloaded the basic drivers to my desktop + got a similar

I'm about to give up     Before I was notified of your post I ordered some new CD's from a supplier reccommended on the download page. So the race is on its supposed to take the discs 10 days 2 arrive.

Is there any way we can adjust the Security settings ( on the R click properites )  so that we have full control of the required actions. Do I need to allow these characteristics to be in herited ?

Re: Re-installing software on XP computer for a Photo smart C4180 printer scanner copier

So the downloaded files are located in the Temp directory? If so, place the download in a simple file location, as it will shorten the 'name' length. Depending on the operating system settings, and the file location it may just be a matter of 'name' length. The 'temp' file in Windows XP is already 4 levels deep, making the name long to start with, before extracting. If that is the problem, no guarantee here, then create a folder on the "C" drive called "PSINSTALL" or something like that. Place the download in there, then double click on it. That will shorten the 'name' or location of the file.

Further explanation of length, which shouldn't make a difference depending on XP service packs for extraction name length, but here goes:

my temp file location would be: C:\Documents and Settings\rick\Local Settings\Temp

if I put the file in the folder suggested above it would be: C:\PSINSTALL which is much shorter

Like I said it may not make much difference, but it sounds like a possiblity based on your feedback. Let me know.
