I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless A909g All-in-One Printer and a HP Notebook Computer running Windows 7 with all updates applied. I have also run HP Update to ensure that all updates are applied. When I start my computer, the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon appears twice in the System Tray. I can close the program, but that removes the program. Can anyone tell me if they know how to prevent the second icon from appearing? Removing the program is not an option.

Hello BrendanTuppack,
it's very weird that the same process runs twice.
This could happen if you installed twice the HP software in two different path.
Please try the following steps:
A) Uninstall the software following the Method two: Uninstall through the Control Panel
B) Before to start the installation please delete all TEMP files;
- Click Start, then Run. The Run window opens.
- In the Open: box, type %temp%.
- Click OK. The system-defined Temp folder opens.
Highlight and delete all of the files in the Temp folder, but not the folder itself.
C) Create a new user account with admin rights;
- Log in using the new account.
D) Be sure that no firewall or anti virus program is running;
E) Install HP SW
I hope this could help.
Best Regards,
F.

Thanks very much Felice, but unfortunately your solution didn't work. So, after around a month of trying to solve the problem by looking at all things HP, I finally decided to do a workaround and change the msconfig file to prevent it starting twice. To do this I clicked Start > Run > Typed "msconfig" > Clicked the Startup Tab > Scrolled to the bottom and unticked one of the two HP Digital Imaging Monitor Startup Items > Clicked Apply > Clicked Close > and rebooted the computer. The solution worked temporarily, however, after several reboots I checked the msconfig Startup tab again and found that the two versions of the HP Digital Imaging Monitor were again ticked. I am a little puzzled as to how it has managed to reset itself and wondered if someone could shed some light on this. Would anyone care to comment on whether this is a Windows 7 issue?

Think I figured it out (havent tested yet, but you can try).
Happened to me after HP Update updated the Digital Imaging Software.
If you look at MSCONFIG, you'll see the directory path showing actual app and then it in startup folder of start menu for second listing.
So, on startup, you have the HP software starting via its own "start at boot" command and again through the startup folder- so it loads twice...
Hope this helps... maybe delete startup folder option?
