Re: Two-sided printing on HP PSC 750 from Windows 7

[ Edited ]

OK, here is the complete procedure for emulating two-sided printing on the HP PSC 750 on Windows 7.

  1. Print the document to PDF
  2. In a PDF viewer, make the proper selections to print only the odd pages, and to print them in reverse order.  In Adobe Acrobat Reader 9, this can be done from the panel that pops up for File->Print.  I did *not* further open up the Properties panel by clicking on the Properties button.  That panel has it's own "Front to back" (or not) button, and I did not use that.
  3. Print these pages out.
  4. If the document has a total number of pages that is odd, set aside the top-most page, which should be the last page and the last odd page.  If the total number of pages is even, skip this step.
  5. Put the remaining pages back into the sheet feeding tray, with the printed odd pages facing up and with the pages oriented so that the top edge of the pages are oriented toward the inside of the printer i.e. the bottom edges of the pages are protruding outward.
  6. In the PDF viewer, make the proper selections to print only the even pages, and to print them *not* in reverse order.  Again, I did this without openining the Properties panel.
  7. The print out should be properly ordered and 2-sided.  If you removed the last page in step 4, then add that page back to the printout now.

Note that in my case in particular, I do not use colour cartridges.  Because of this, I clicked the Properties button on the Print panel, selected the Paper/Quality tab of the Properties window that pops up, then selected Black&White instead of Colour.  Even though the PDF document was colour, selecting Black&White causes this to be properly rendered onto gray scale on the hard copy.  This seems far better than the arrangement in the Windows XP driver, where choosing "Print in grayscale" meant that colour cartridges are used to emulate grayscale (unless you also select "Black only").

Here is a slight modification of the above procedure to make it less different than printing out just one page or printing out single-sided:

  1. Print the document to PDF
  2. In a PDF viewer, make the proper selections to print only the odd pages, and to print them *not* in reverse order.  In Adobe Acrobat Reader 9, this can be done from the panel that pops up for File->Print.
  3. Print these pages out.
  4. If the document has a total number of pages that is odd, set aside the last page, which should also be the last odd page.
  6. In the PDF viewer, make the proper selections to print only the even pages, and to print them in *reverse* order.  Again, I did this without openining the Properties panel.
  7. The print out should be properly ordered and 2-sided.  If you removed the last page in step 4, then add that page back to the printout now.
