Update firmware on HP 6500 A Plus all-in-one

I cannot update the firmware in my new printer. I've tried a laptop with Windows 7, Windows XP, the printer product update panel (wireless and plugging the printer directly into the internet). The laptops find the printer but will not let me select it for updating. The printer panel says no updates available. what do I do? Is there something wrong with the printer? I need the update. Thanks.

I've done everything (USB and Control Panel) and nothing works. Could it be the printer?

Okay, so if you have downloaded OJ6500_E710a-f_R1126A.exe (firmware update) to the computer, and tried to run the firmware update without success. And made sure the USB cable was okay (just to cover all bases) then it is probably an issue with the printer itself.
If that is the case, I would contact tech support 1-800-474-6836 for warranty/out of warranty support. It may need replaced.

Hello,
I have just purchased an Officejet 6500A and I am also unable to update the firmware either via web services on the control panel or via the USB update method.
Current firmware is SYM2FN1110AR and the latest version is SYM2FN1126AR dated 2011-08-22
Via web services on control panel - response is "No product update is available for this printer"
Via USB update - download runs but unable to select the printer via the checkbox on the Welcome to HP Printer Update dialog.

If you need this update and are unable to successfully complete it per the above instructions, then I would contact tech support 1-800-474-6836 for warranty/out of warranty support.

Contacted UK support and they were unable to update firmware on this device. They offered to replace it or suggested returning it to the retailer which I did.
I purchased a second device (probably from the same consignment as the original given the serial number) which exhibited the exact same symptoms.
Called support and they were unable to update the firmware. Clearly the firmware updating process is not working as it should. The technician was going to monitor the issue and calls recieved and then raise it with the development team.
So will await a fix in case the specified fix / enhancements are material?

I had same problem with the firmware update.
Then I somehow landed on this page http://www8.hp.com/za/en/support-drivers.html and noticed that there are different firmware upgrades for the 6500A and Plus versions. I suspect you have same issue here because the mac version of the software shows a filename with an E710a-f and E710n-z respectively.
That upgraded the firmware successfully, but I could still not do the webservices because it still refuses to download via my netwrok, even when I am on wired.
