Vista 64 bit - Laserjet 1022n crash the print spooler with pdf files

Hi everybody,

What happens is that from time to time the print spooler crashes.

This happen mostly on pdf files.

Printer driver is updated to latest version.

The printer is connected via usb.

FYI another HP printer (Deskjet F4280) conected to the PC in the same way can print the files that make the system crash.

Thanks in advance

Re: Vista 64 bit - Laserjet 1022n crash the print spooler with pdf files

Same problem.  First solution was a repair of Vista (64bit) next was a reinstall of OS next was $49.00 repair by Microsoft themselves, next was Microsoft giving up.  They also state catgegorically that you can only have one printer attached...BS!  In the process Microsoft uninstalled all print drivers and reinstalled to no avail.  That gave me a clue.

I found that I could restart the spooler manually (in services) and access the drivers...once...but that was enough to find that the only driver corrupted was the 1020 driver.  Deleted the driver and reinstalled latest driver.  Everything worked until I tried to print the same .pdf file...Crashed the driver.

Deleted/reinstalled and tried a print using a Photosmart 7960.  No problem.  Printed using Deskjet 4260 (I know, I'm obsessed)  no problem.  So the problem is with the f****** 1020 driver.

Could the problem be with an incomplete deletion of the original 1020 driver?  If so, how can I COMPLETELY remove it.  I'm not great with messing with the registry.

I also ready to ditch the 1020.  30,000 pages printed so it may be near the end of its service life.

Thanks

Re: Vista 64 bit - Laserjet 1022n crash the print spooler with pdf files

It looks like this printer driver cannot handle .pdf files.

I would suggest to get a replacement printer after you do your research.

Any way, in order to fully recover after sending a .pdf job to this printer without restarting goes as this:

From task manager, kill spoolsv.exe process

Browse to %systemroot%\System32\spool\PRINTERS

If you see files in here delete them, these are the spooled jobs that are stuck (if no files exist, move on)

Restart the spooler service

This has worked 100% for me.

It is too bad that this printer has this silly issue. I mean who does not print pdf's these days?!

Re: Vista 64 bit - Laserjet 1022n crash the print spooler with pdf files

I was searching for a solution to this and found this link right below the link to this HP forum.

It seems to work for a lot of other folks with this issue.

It also makes sense that it's a driver issue that can't handle the advanced features in the PDF document.

Here is the link:
