Vista Duplex Patch - DeskJet 9800

[ Edited ]

Some printer models with automatic duplexers do not properly print the back page in Vista.  In these models the back side is printed updside down regardless of the driver settings.

The attached zip file has a patch and instructions to correct this issue for the Deskjet 9800 printers.

Patches for other models may be available here.

This patch has been well tested, with over 150 copies of this patch distributed via email since April 2007.

The zip file has two files:

DJ9800.pdf     contains detailed instructions to apply the patch.  Opening this file requires Adobe Reader or a similar pdf viewer, available for free download.

hpw9800t.gpd  is the actual patch file.

To apply the patch download the zip file attached here.  Extract the files into the %temp% directory, then open the  DJ9800.pdf file and follow the instructions.

Re: Vista Duplex Patch - DeskJet 9800

Does this patch apply to Windows 7 as well?  I don't see the automatic duplexing function coming up for my 9800D and this worked fine in Vista 32-bit.

Thanks

I do not know if the patch is necessary in Windows 7 to correct the back side upside down issue. (Please post here with your findings.)  Vista and Windows 7 default to the duplexer being not installed.  To correct this in Windows 7 do the following:  go to the Printers folder, right click on the Deskjet 9800d, Printer Properties, Device Settings, Installable options and set the duplex unit to installed.  If the back side prints upside down then apply the patch here.

This indicates the spooler was not running.  This is not expected, but OK at this point - the NET STOP SPOOLER command would have stopped the spooler if it was running and the spooler will be restarted at the end of the the process.  If the spooler does not restart at the end of the process after the NET START SPOOLER command then some troubleshooting will be required.  If this is the case please indicate here any error messages you see.

Re: Vista Duplex Patch - DeskJet 9800

I have this problem on Windows 7. The Device Settings says the duplexer isn't installed . The printer properties won't let me see the duplexing options. Duplexed pages print upside-down.

I applied the patch as per the instructions. I can go into the Device Settings to set the duplexer to Installed and apply the changes. All well and good but as soon as I click the OK button, Windows immediately puts the setting back to Not Installed. No matter what I do, the printer driver doesn't show any settings for two sided printing. I can't get the Installed status to stick.

Any idea about this problem?

Check the "Security" tab and make sure the user making the changes has permission to "Manage this Printer".

Re: Vista Duplex Patch - DeskJet 9800

Thanks for responding. Yes, I can confirm that my domain user account has full security rights over this printer. I even changed the ownership from System to my user account. The same problem remains; it's not a security issue. It's almost like Windows doesn't believe or can't detect the prescence of the duplexer and so changes the status back again. The reality is that there is a great chunk of plastic sticking out the back of the printer for auto duplexing. :smileyhappy: The printer worked fine under WinXP before the upgrade to Win7, so it's not a hardware issue either.

I can set manual duplexing to be enabled and this does stick and causes the manual duplexing configuration to appear in the printer properties.
