Some HP printer models have issues printing with an automatic duplexer in Vista. In these models the back side of the page comes out upside down regardless of the driver settings. Patches are available for the following models to correct this issue. Click on the model name and you will be taken to the link where you can download the patch and detailed instructions. Windows 7 systems that have been updated from Vista and for some models XP SP3 systems can also use the patches.
[Update - HP has now corrected this issue in many drivers. Check here before proceeding, the HP solution is better automated for installing the fix.]
For models not listed below please check the Vista Duplex Printing Troubleshooting Guide.
Business InkJet 1200
Business InkJet 2230
Business InkJet 2280
HP Color InkJet cp1700 (Also addresses large format printing but does not correct tray selection.) Updated May 2009 to correct margins for large format printing.
DeskJet 5550 series
DeskJet 5600 series
DeskJet 9800 printer
OfficeJet D series (D135, D145, D155)
OfficeJet 6100 series
Photosmart 2710
Photosmart 3310
Photosmart 8400 series

I just finished installing the patch that Bob Headrick provided, using the abbreviated instructions that he gave me. The fix is simple (although Vista wants to make it harder...). All-in-all, his patch works!
Thank you, Bob, and kudos for your rescue of some portion of the functionality of my OJ 7410xi. Now, I can, at least, continue to print when I have to.
Now, if only an HP-mod would look at my "Scanning and Faxing...." question!

Bob Headrick's patch also worked for me and my PhotoSmart 3210. Thanks Bob!
My problems with the duplexer always printing the backside upside down only occurred when I installed the driver from the HP support site on my Vista laptop. Prior to that I had been using the printer "indirectly" by connecting to it through my XP-based home server (it's a shared printer on the server). The XP driver works fine (pages print on both sides the right way up), but the printing process was somewhat slow by going through the server. Now with my Vista laptop printing directly to the networked 3210 everything works much more quickly, and I can also scan pictures and documents directly into the laptop, rather than only into the server.
Regards, JimW

Thx to Bob for sending me the patch and install instructions for OfficeJet 6110 on Vista.
I can now use the duplexer.
Now if I could print with the Black Cartridge Only I would be happy.

Hi Jim -
What issue are you seeing with the Photosmart D7460 with the duplexer? If it is not recognizing the duplexer try the following: Go to the printers folder, doubleclick on the Photosmart D7460, Printers, Properties, Device Settings and set the duplexer to "Installed".
If the duplexer is recognized but prints the back side upside down then go to the printers folder, doubleclick on the Photosmart D7460, Printers, Properties, About. Next scroll through the Driver Files sectioon and please list here all the files ending in .GPD. I may be able to get something to work with that information.

Hi Jan -
Please send me an email as described in my first post. I have a patch for the Officejet 7410. For the L7555 please refer to my post above to Jim and try the solutions shown there. If that does not help please include the GPD information in your request as well as confirmation that the printer is printing the back side upside down.
