Which file, the patch ZIP file or the PDF or GPD files in the ZIP?  You can open the ZIP file using Winzip or some similar.  If you are having trouble with the PDF file then download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader here.

If the problem is with the GPD file then carefully read the detailed instructions.  You do not open the GPD file, it is simply copied to the proper directory.

Re: Vista/Windows 7 Duplex Patch for Officejet 7210 7310 7410 and Photosmart 2610 2710

Bob,

Thank you again from another happy person. I just installed the patch on my two computers at home and it works great. I was another one of those a bit frustrated with tech support. They "fixed" my issue by installing the drivers for the HP990c and yes it "fixed" the issue but I did not pay for the 990c. Anyway, I am very glad that I looked at the forums and saw your fix. Thanks again for lending your knowledge to help us. Have a great one.

Alex

Hi Bob,

I have found that the Win 7 64 system driver exhibits the same problem with side 2 inverted.  Any other suggestions?

Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate Officejet 7310xi - No Automated Duplex

The latest HP software from the HP site does not recognize the automated duplex feature in this HP printer (I'll reserve my sarcastic remarks about that failure for another time) for Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I have tried following the instructions here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01909142. They do not work. In step 1, #4 - 5, you are to go into the printer properties and tell it there is a duplexer installed. That selection is grayed out, even when running as administrator.

Is there any known fix for this problem other than throwing out my old HP printer and buying another brand?

Firstly, the duplexer is not "enabled" by default on the Officejet 7310 because it generally shipped without the duplexer which was added as an option.

Secondly, the Duplexer works fine for me in Windows 7 x64.  One thing to check - make sure you do not have any printer dialog boxes open (other than the one where you are setting the duplexer settings).  You can apply the Vista patch, it will work fine in Windows 7 as well but is normally not required.  (It may be needed if you updated your system from Vista rather then had a fresh install of Windows 7.)

Re: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate Officejet 7310xi - No Automated Duplex

I found the problem on my own. The directions on the link I posted are incorrect for Windows 7 Ultimate x64.  There is a missing step. After opening the Printer Properties dialog and *before* selecting the Device Settings tab, you must click on "Change Properties". Otherwise, all options on the Device Settings tab will be grayed out and you will only be able to view the settings. See below. Once the "Change Properties" button is pressed, you can follow the rest of the directions to enable the duplexing feature.

Interesting - I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and do not have the "Change Properties" button, and can change the settings without it.  Are you on a domain and/or have some group policies set?

If the system was upgraded from Vista then apply the patch to correct the issue.  For a clean install of Windows 7 the provided driver should work with a few caveats: the driver may ignore the checkbox for duplexing on the short or long edges, resulting in issues when printing in landscape mode.  Please provide details of what print settings you are having issues with.
