Some printer model with automatic duplexers do not properly print the back page in Vista (or in Windows 7 if updated from Vista). In these models the back side is printed updside down regardless of the driver settings.
The attached zip file has a patch and instructions to correct this issue for the following printers:
Officejet 7210
Officejet 7310
Officejet 7410
Officejet L7300
Photosmart 2610
Photosmart 2710
Patches for other models may be available here.
This patch has been well tested, with over 1800 copies of this patch distributed via email since April 2007.
The zip file has two files
OJ7410.pdf contains detailed instructions to apply the patch. Opening this file requires Adobe Reader or a similar pdf viewer, available for free download.
hpo7x00t.gpd is the actual patch file.
To apply the patch download the zip file attached here. Extract the files into the %temp% directory, then open the OJ7410.pdf file and follow the instructions. If you have difficulty finding the %temp% directory you can find this directory by opening your "computer" folder and typing %temp% in the address bar.

Bob sent the patch immediately even though it was a weekend. Thanks, Bob. His installation directions were good, however, I use Mozilla Firefox and the download did not go into a "temp" directory. Also, after I installed the patch, my printer thought there was no driver. After I installed the driver again, my original backside upside-down printing problem returned. So, I manually copied the patch files again and re-booted twice. That did the trick for some reason.
It's been a frustrating problem that should never have been a problem in the first place.

The Windows 7 driver does not allow automatic duplex printing. The options are manual, or booklet *two or more pages per page". How can you print one page per side double sided automatically?
Actually the Windows 7 driver does automatic duplex printing well - no patch is required for Windows 7 [edit - this is true for fresh installs. For versions updated from Vista the patch may need to be used for Windows 7]. The default for some printers is that the duplexer is "not installed", please check the Vista Duplex Printing Troubleshooting Guide. In Windows 7 the procedure is a bit different, from the Printers folder double-click on the 7410, double-click on the "Customize your printer" icon, Device Settings and under installable options set the "Duplex Unit for two sided printing" to installed, OK.

I recently bought the auto duplex accessary for the photosmart 2610xi but the computer is not recognizing.the auto duplexer is installed properly, but it wont print double sided. I have windows vista 64 bit. i have looked at the other post on this page and it appears there software that could fix this issue...could anyone offer any help?
The default for some printers is that the duplexer is "not installed", please check the Vista Duplex Printing Troubleshooting Guide which says:
No option for two-sided printing. The selection for automatic two sided printing may be grayed out, or only manual duplexing is offered. This typically occurs because the duplexer is not recognized as installed, or the driver may default to not installed. To correct this do the following: go to Start, Control Panel, Printers, right-click on the printer, Run as Administrator, Properties, (continue), Device Settings, Installable Options, set the "Two Sided Duplex Unit" to installed, OK.
Once you have enabled the duplexer you will find that in Vista the back side will print upside down regardless of settings. The patch in the first item in this thread will correct this issue. Click on the paper clip, save the file to your computer and then follow the instructions to install the patch.
