Cannot find a driver for HP LaserJet 1022 (non-networked, directly connected) printer. The one from the HP website doesn't work. This is a fully up to date Win7 64-bit installation.
Thank you very much for any help you can give!!

hi there,
could you provide the community with a little more information to help narrow troubleshooting? Are you getting any errors or messages when trying to install the driver?

The particular printer that I have is a LaserJet 1022 (basic version). It had been installed & worked fine under WinXP. Before changing computers/OS to Win7 64bit, I checked to make sure that there was a driver available. The machine does not appear on HP's "List of Supported Printers" (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam
But, when I search for the printer model, I do find a basic driver for the HP 1020/1022 that HP says should work. However, when I download/install that driver, I still can't get it to work. In the installation process, it comes to a point where an alert tells me to connect the USB cable to the printer and turn the printer on, even though it has been connected/on all the time. It makes no difference if I leave it "on" from the start of the install process or connect/turn it on at that point in the process, my computer still won't recognize or talk to the printer. It treats it as though it were not present at all. I think I've runt the gamut on installs of the driver "package" to uninstall/reinstall, etc. Also, I put to use whatever process tips from other forums that seemed to have a similar issue, but to no avail.
Am at a loss where to go next....

hi there tools12345,
Sounds like the install is failing right at or during the plug and play installation. Try the steps in this article under solution two: Software troubleshooting. Let us know if it helps or not.
Best of Luck!

Further data: The printer shows up as an "unspecified device" in the Device Manager. When I explore the details on it, it statees on the one hand that the device is working properly, and that there is a device driver installed (with a date of 2006), but it claims on the other hand not to recognize the device (even though on a following line it has the manufacturer and model number), and labels it as Unknown. When I go through the routine to update the driver, it states that it cannot find any driver for it.
I will post again after I complete my test per your suggestion...

The process hangs at this point, like before, with this message, even though the device is connected. I can disconnnect/reconnect, turn off/10seconds/turn on, yet nothing progresses beyond this point. Can't seem to post the screen shot, but the message asks me to Connect (the printer) via the USB port and make sure the device is powered on. The illustration shows a USB cable being appropriately connected on both ends.
A lower message (the Installation Counter graph) says "Installing--waiting for user to connect the device". But even though I connect, disconnect, and reconnect, it doesn't budge.

I don't have much faith in 3rd party device managers, but I was desperate enough to try one, and it actually worked!!!! I don't know exactly how its driver differs from the one on the HP website, but it seemed to be a similar filename. It did not get hung up in the install process. I am grateful, but I am also wary, as I couldn't separate it from a Norton tag-along in the file download. So now I have to get rid of that...
Still don't know why HP couldn't just have had the proper working driver up on their site to begin with...

Im not too sure what the difference in drivers is going to be. Perhaps it was just a bad download. In any case I am super glad to hear you got it working and sorry that it was so much of a hassle. Let us know if we can be of any further help.

If it was a bad download, it would be nice if HP would fix it. All told and through various routes, I downloaded the same driver from the HP website over a half dozen times, all with the same result. One would suppose that, if it was a flaw that happened in the downloading process that at least one of those times would have been different, but that is not what happened, so I am led to assume the file on the HP website is flawed in some regard. It is supposed to be a "basic" driver that covers multiple printer models--I hope it at least works with the other models, but I suspect that they, too, would have the same issue.

Here is a I have created a document (see attached) that has 3 different install methods. These install methods have been tested several times on several different system and all have worked successfully, both in printing test pages and in printing from Word, in the 32 and 64 bit environments.
Several people have reported that install method 3 has worked successfully for them.
If you have downloaded drivers previous drivers and you want to clean them off your system, you will need to delete everything that has LJ1020 or LJ 1022 associated with it. This means removing everything from the driver store and from all HP folders. You will need to look in your Print Server Properties (at the top of your device manager, make sure you have at least one driver with a green check mark on it and it isn't the LJ1022 so you can see the Print Server Properties) and delete the driver and package from here. As well as delete the LJ1022 folders from your C://Program files and your recycle bin. Then make sure your reboot your computer BEFORE you try and reinstall anything. You may have to do this a couple of time before everything is off your system.
