can't add printer; software unavailable

officejet 5610, iMac running OS 10.7.3.  it wouldn't scan (error message:  "scanner not found"), so i deleted the printer from the list of printers and tried to re-add it using "add printer" in sys pref.  when i do, i get an error message:  "The software for this printer is currently unavailable.  Please contact the printer's manufacturer for the latest software."  (and to make sure "currently" didn't mean a server down or something, i checked hours later, still same error msg.)  but when i go to the HP web site to download it, it is only available through software update.  when i run software update, it shows i am up to date on all software (presumably the HP drivers also).  so now i still can't scan, but i can't print either (since the printer won't add to the list).  how do i install the drivers so i can print and scan?

fixed.  can't figure out why it works now, but not complaining.  "declare success and have a parade."
