This page lists the supported printers for Windows 7 and there is no entry for the Laserjet 1000 which suggests "If your legacy product is not listed, no support is offered for Windows® 7".

Well, Bob, can you explain why there are no plans for a driver for the HP LaserJet 1000 with Windows 7 ?
You see, if there's some technical reason that it cannot be done - and I have worked 40+ years in the computer industry and I find that deeply unlikely - anyway, if there is such a reason that you can explain then fair enough.
If there is no such reason then it looks as though HP are doing this to make users buy another printer.
I am in the process of buying another printer for this very reason.
Be assured that this printer I am buying and all future peripherals that I buy will not come from HP. Why would I ? Who knows how long they will last before their deliberate obsolescence ?
I hope that anyone else reading this will take the same action.

As listed here HP has drivers for over five hundred printer models in Windows 7, including models a dozen years or more old.
I do not work for or speak for HP.

thats fine, but the good solid reliable as hell (OLD) 1000 is CONSPICUOUSLY ABSENT. Guess HP just wants us fools to buy a new printer. Well, mine will NOT be an HP. *@+* them.

There is a fix for the Laserjet 1000.
Search out the driver for the Laserjet 1000 called "HP Laserjet 1000 Host Based Driver" on the HP home page.
Download the drivers (not the HP software). These drivers are listed for XP and Vista as a "fix" 32-bit version.
Expand the downloaded drivers if they are compressed.
Your printer should be already plugged in at this point and causing an error in the Device Manager as missing drivers for it.
Go to the Device Manager and right lick the HP Laserjet 1000 icon.
Select the "Update drivers" for the printer.
Point the Printer to the location where you downloaded the drivers to.
The Printer will install and work at this point.
The icon for the printer will not be correct (it looks like an all-in-one),.. but the Laserjet 1000 will function 100%.
Your Welcome!

I works for me this way on win 7 32 bit, download lj1000hostbased-en.exe for XP from HP, run install. from control panel, find the laserjet 1000 icon. It should have a question mark. Update the driver, point to C:\ lj1000hb folder. It will update the driver. and printer is ready to use. Not sure if this work for win7 64 bit or not.

This does not work with the 64 bit version of Windows 7. I have been using a workaround with PDFCreator and a doc print program on a Windows XP machine although this is not a reliable solution. Any suggestions?

Thank you Dell240.
I followed the steps you gave but when I get to my HP 1000 icon it doesn't have a question mark but an exclamation mark and seems not able to update drivers.
Any idea how I can work around this?
Thanks
