photosmart 8250 works as a local printer but jams as a network shared printer

I have an hp photosmart 8250 that prints fine when used as a local printer but jams when accessed as a shared printer through the network.

 

Here's the scenario.

 

I have a desktop running Vista Ultimate.  The printer is locally attached to this machine, and it works fine. I have a laptop (Toshiba L300D x64 vista home premium sp2) that is wireless connected through a home network. The printer is shared across the network.

 

When I try to print from any windows application on the laptop, the printer jams.  Every single time. Printing a test page (from the printer properties) works. Printing works fine if I physically attach the printer to the laptop as a local printer.

 

I have tried different print settings, different paper, etc etc.  Nothing makes a difference.

 

Anybody have any suggestions (other than buying a lexmark).
