After calling HP Service center and working on this problem for 2 hours they could not solve a it
I also worked on it for four days straight in cannot solve it.
8600 officejet pro works with windows XP -visa and I think windows8 and 8.1
But when I talked to a Microsoft representative he laughed. He said the driver is two years old.
And they have had 3 upgrades just on windows 8.1 that current one is a spring release that happened about a month ago.
And the drivers need to be updated. When I installed the software it would not recognize my printer. And kept saying something about the IP address was wrong
or the firewall was wrong. HP support worked on the firewall upgraded the drives and it still did not work.
The reason for that is because of that drives are still two years old. And Microsoft Rep said that's about when windows 8 came out.
So if you're having problems and there's nothing you could do untill HP realizes this and writes a new upgrade driver for the new 8.1 spring edition that came out.
unless somebody else has a fix....... this is reality. So HP software engineers please, please, please get on this!!! I can not use my printer
and I think a lot of other people won't be able to....

Sorry that you are having problems. The drivers for 8600 officejet pro are in the win8.1 OS. Unfortunately after OS upgrade, you will need to re-install the printer.
If you have the full software installed, you can remove device from the Control Panel and then re-install by running the desktop shortcut for your printer.

Thank you very much the driver works. That's not the problem! the software that controls scanning, e-mail and all the other features does not work at all. So the only thing I can do is print but nothing else hope this problem is solved by an updated software program. no fax no scanning from my printer to computer and all the other functions do not work only
