Persuading a Deskjet 940c to work with Windows 7

I have a Deskjet 940c with a parallel port connection.

I have just upgraded my PC to Windows 7 (64-bit) and there are no available drivers for this combination.

HP has ceased to update its software for this printer and Windows 7 does not have its own driver for this printer.

Can I use any other driver to get the printer to work? If so, which?

Cheers

Ralph

Re: Persuading a Deskjet 940c to work with Windows 7

You can user the Deskjet 940C driver HP has supplied to Microsoft that is distributed through Windows Update.  Do the following:  connect the printer to the LPT1: port, go to the Devices and Printers folder and select Add a Printer, Local Printer, LPT1:, click on Windows Update, wait for the list to repopulate, then select the Deskjet 940C.

Did all you said and my 940C is still showing an error.

All windows updates are current.

Using windows 7 64 bit

What error are you seeing?  Can you print a standalone test page as shown here?  If not then open the lid with the printer turned on and note where the carriage moves as shown here.

I don't have the 940 driver listed. What do I need to do.

I don't understand why I have to hunt and search for drivers for this printer.

HP just have a link to the driver.

Re: Persuading a Deskjet 940c to work with Windows 7

Can you do me a favour?

I have a 940c and it seems that a small spring fell.

The head does not move unless I tense the belt that carries the head.

When that happened I found that there was a small spring in the paper tray so I am guessing that it fell from somewhere.

Can you take a picture of where that spring is in your printer and post it to image shack or something like that?

I'll really appreciate that as I cannot find any diagrams or pictures.

The Deskjet 940c driver is delivered through Windows Update as shown here.  It is listed under HP, not Hewlett-Packard.  See here for more information.

Re: Persuading a Deskjet 940c to work with Windows 7

I am having a similar problem.  I am connected by the USB port from Win7 to my 940c.  When I send a file, the printer pulls in a sheet of paper and sometimes begins to print but stops.  Sometimes it doesn't even begin to print.  When I look at the print queue, I get the message "printer error" and no other information.  I have uninstalled the printer and installed it again which happens automatically and I still can't do a simple print.  I tried the HP scan doctor and that was of no help.  I did the standalone tests and the 940c passes all of them indicating to me there is a communications problem between my new PC and the 940c.

What do I try next?
