I have found the the HP ENVY 4500 all-in-one printer is not compatible with the Windows 8 based Surface using the RTS operation system, even though it is advertised as a smartphone and tablet printer.  What a bummer.

The Windows RT systems can be used with the PCL3 drivers as described in the post here.

Re: Windows 8 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Printer Drivers

Thank you for a solution.  I manged to contat the HP Customer Support and received their solution.  HP recommended that I use the HP Photosmart Prem C310 series class drivers to drive the HP ENVY 4500 on my Windows 8 Surface RT.

Re: Windows 8 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Printer Drivers

I have an F4180 and my driver CD is pretty old. I have bought a notebook with win8 on it. I have downloaded the driver for the printer. The notebook can control the printer (e.g. ink level), I can have scans but I cannot have print-outs. Is there any way I can overcome this problem? Thank you in advance for your help.
