AirPrint to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium

I have a OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium and have not been able to get my new iPad (iOS 5.1) to see the printer.   The printer is on the same wireless LAN/subnet as the iPad.  The printer is shared in Windows 7.  I understand Bonjour is used for discover and don't know of anything blocking the traffic.  The printer firmware and software show as up to date.  Is there software that needs to be installed on Windows 7 (64-bit).  My next step is to open a case with my firewall/ap vendor, Juniper Networks. ePrint is working fine.

The next important step is the router.  Which router do you have?

Sorry to read you are having such trouble.

If you go to devices and printers on your computer, and select printer properties, go to the ports tab, and ensure bidirectional support is checked at the bottom.

Also, ensure multicasting is enabled on your router, the steps to enable it are different for every brand of router.

If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!

Re: AirPrint to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium

Some routers just don't support Bonjour.  Without Bonjour, Airprint doesn't work.  Please tell us what your router is and we can probably tell you if this is the cause of your problem.

Re: AirPrint to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium

I have a Juniper Networks SRX210 with a AX-411 access point.  I am a network engineer by profession.  The devices are on the same SSID/vLAN/subnet.  There is an any any policy between the deivces which is required in JUNOS within a security zone.

Re: AirPrint to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium

Thank you all for the help.  I am looking further at multicast in the firewall and will probably open a case with JTAC soon.

Re: AirPrint to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium

Airprint will only tolerate one hop, if the packets are being routed by the SRX210 and then out the AX-411 this might be introducing an extra hop.

Re: AirPrint to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium

To rule out Bonjour, try one of the many Bonjour Browsers out their and see if that can find the printer.  You can find a bonjour browser for windows here:

Re: AirPrint to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium

The thought is good, but does not apply to these devices.  The AX-411 is not a layer 3 device.  All of the layer three boudaries are defined in the SRX210.  As the iPad and printer are on the same subnet, there is not an additional hop.  I am familiar with routing multicast protocols across layer three boundaries and do for video survelance systems at work.  In this case, I wanted to get it to work on a single subnet first, which is what is being attemtped.  I beleive I have a multcast confiugration issue that I will pursue with JTAC.  Thanks again.

Re: AirPrint to OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium

While Bonjour is a multicast protocol it requires more than simple multicast support.  I've seen routers that had multicast enabled yet they were not compatible with Bonjour.  The linksys wrt110 is one such example.
