Printer will connect via wired ethernet. I can use the http utility.
Printer will connect via unsecured wireless connection.
Printer defaults to autoconfig (169.xxx)when connected via WEP (both open and shared), will not connect with a manual IP address. Cannot access http utility.
Printer won't even autoconfig when connected via WPA-Personal - instead says "No connection found."
Printer is in the same uncluttered room as the router.
ALL OTHER wireless network devices work fine and keep up with security changes.
I have legacy devices on the network that make me want to run with WEP.
I've run the HP Network Diagnostic. It can access my router just fine. It cannot find the printer.
Router is D-Link DIR-655.
I jump through the right hoops - refresh router, restore factory defaults on printer, etc. All other wireless network devices work fine.
I want to pull an "Office Space" on this brand-new printer - please save me from doing so!

WEP shared will not work with some of HP's radios. Try WEP open again.
When you try WEP open again let me know what happens on the front panel. Do you find the SSID? Can you enter the WEP key successfully?

WEP is not at all secure. It can be broken in about 10 minutes with freeware.
For a more secure network and fewer connection problems, use WPA or WPA2 with a strong 13+ character passphrase that YOU create!

With WEP Open:
1. Tt finds the SSID & allows me to enter the WEP key successfully (and returns an error if it is entered incorrectly)
2. After connecting, it then displays its Host name, an autoconfig IP (169.xxx...) its wireless MAC address, and SSID of my wireless network.
3. After that, I can't ping it, access the http utility, locate it via HP Network Diag, etc. regardless of whether it is set to Automatic IP, Manual IP of my 192.168.0.xxx with correct subnet of my router, whether or not I reserved a matching IP address for it on the DHCP server of my router.
With wired ethernet connection or unsecured open wireless connection, it connects great. Near/full signal strength.
It's a puzzler. I keep going back over the details, dotting i's and crossing t's, and nothing. Any other steps to try?

Although I understand how you feel about WEP, in no way does that solve the problem I'm presenting. The OP states that the printer will not connect with ANY wireless protection present, which includes WPA, while the other devices on my network will connect with the router using WEPs or WPAs.

Ooops, my mistake. Thanks for pointing it out.
Another idea is to make sure the firmware is updated on the router.
Also, from the control panel of the printer: Setup > Network > Wireless Network Test. It will self-test the printer radio.

AHA! Finally decided to test the printer with another KG router - my HTC EVO. Success!
I had assumed that since everything else was working with the router, the router could be eliminated.
Upgraded firmware on router, and everything works fine. Thanks for the help!

If your ISP supplies your router you probably do not nor cannot update its firmware.
