well my c4580 does not work wirelessly. So I hooked it up via usb to try to install the updates and the update program still cannot find the printer. Even though I can see its status in control panel and can print pages.
It appears this is a known issue as others have posted on it. I posted yesterday and had 1 reply from a hp employee telling me to set it to online, which as I informed him/her it was already in online mode and the only option it had was to set it to offline.
Then today I find that the whole thread has been deleted. It seems HP are trying to hide issues with their products, I am far from impressed

Hi NeverWorks,
Yes, this is a known issue. Yes, many customers have posted/discussed it. Also, many man hours have been spent behind the scenes to resolve the issues, hence the patch you mentioned. The patch/update resolves the issue and prevents the printer from getting stuck in 'sleep mode.' BTW, I have one of these printers and the patch resolved the unresponsive behavior I was experiencing. Here's a link to the document that describes the issue and provides download instructions: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam
Now, to your issue, the fact that you can't get your printer set-up wireless doesn't mean that you have this issue. It sounds to me like you have a whole different issue, you can't get your printer set-up on a wireless network. Have you ever used your printer wirelessly? If not, I would start with the install guide and follow the steps. If they don't' work, note how far you got and document any errors or messages you see. Let me know how it turns out.
(BTW, I have no idea why a thread on this topic would be pulled. The forums are an easy way for us to communicate with customers and provide solutions to known issues. I searched for myself and found many threads on the topic. Granted most of 'em are old, but that's expected as the patch was available early summer '09.)

Hi Neverworks,
I checked and we have not removed any of your posts. The only other thread you have posted in is this one:
Maybe that is the one you were thinking of?

I do apologise. The reason it appeared it had been pulled is due to some odd bug whether its browser related or due to your site I dont know, but upon following the link from my email back to the thread, it requested I log in to view the page, I logged in only to recieve a page stating that the thread had been removed. Strange, as if I instead log into the site, THEN hit the link, it takes me to the correct thread / page.
Anyway...
The printer successfully completed setup for network, worked perfectly fine for a while, then next day, despite claiming it was online and ready, sending documents to it resulted in nothing happening.
So figured I would try the updates... so I re-installed the printer but this time set it up for USB connection, installation completed fine, test pages printed fine and no issues, ran updates and yet none of the updates appear to want to install as none of them seem to be able to find the printer. I can see it perfectly fine in my control panel / printers, I can print on it, the HP solution centre shows its status as ready too, so why does the update tell me I have no device connected?
It is extremely frustrating. And now I keep getting the "hp digital imaging monitor has stopped working" error message in windows vista. Just seems to be problem after problem at the moment.

I am seeing a trend with my C4580. Generally the wireless connection is working for both my laptop and desktop PC's. I experience problems when I leave the PC on for a few days. (screen darkens, printer offline) If I restart the computer the printer starts working again. Another solution is to unplug the printer. I cannot turn the printer off when the screen darkens.
I think it may have something to do with my verizon internet firewall service updates. It seems that they frequently update the service and because I rarely turn the PC off I am guessing that it may put the printer offline when it updates. When I shut down and log back on my printer works again.

There are two firmware updates for the C4580 available here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os
Download and apply them to the printer. It may solve your issue.
