- Do you have access to another router to try?
- How about completely uninstalling Norton followed by a fresh reboot?
- How about a re-install of XP?
I know these are radical, but we have tried about everything else.

PrintDoc,
- Do you have access to another router to try?
- How about completely uninstalling Norton followed by a fresh reboot?
- How about a re-install of XP?
I know these are radical, but we have tried about everything else.
I see your point.
Nevertheless, I want to point out that I have the same problem with two other machines (XP SP3 with Kerio firewall, XP SP3 w/out firewall).
Moreover, on my network there are an Epson printer shared by another PC and an HP Laserjet printer connected to a NAS (currently removed from my PC to have no conflicts with the 8500A installation).
I never experienced problems with network before to buy the 8500A.
Taking into account that several users posted issues about 8500A and network, my feeling is that the OfficeJet 8500A has significant problems to work as a network printer.
And HP should promptly provide users a sw/firmware fix to solve this issue.
I purchased the 8500A because I need a multifunction printer to be shared on the network.
And my conclusion is that HP is selling a product not compliant with the stated specifications.

In the printer Embedded Web Server, go to Network > Advanced and have it use IPv4 ONLY.

You just triggered another idea, let's disable IPv6 in the printer.

I disabled the IPv6 in the printer network configuration, but the installation procedure is still unable to find the printer on the network.

This was the way that worked for me.
I disabled comodo, installed the printer via the cd for wireless network printer, printed a test page After this, I then enabled comodo. After enabling comodo I placed the security settings for the firewall to custom.
Now, when you try to get the ink levels, and scan to network folder setup, under the printer settings (black icon that installs on your desktop) comodo alerts you that they are trying to access your home netwrok, I allowed them. After that I placed the frirewall security seetings back to safe mode which was there by defalut. I have not had any issues since.
Basically what is happening is that by deflaut comodo is set to safe mode and so its blocking the inconing and outgoing signals from the printer to your home network for your pc. By disbaling comodo, installing the cd and than placing comodo to custom, this allows for the protocol to pop up for you to allow. This is a pain but if you can follow these steps you should be fine and not have to worry about it again.

Thank for your suggestion, but, in my case, the executables were not blocked by Comodo firewall. I defined a local network that includes all the IPs of the pcs and the printer.
I also tried to add a specific instance for the printer allowing the incoming / outcoming traffic to both TCP and UDP ports, but nothing changed.

I succeeded in installing the printer thanks to a thread posted in the Comodo forum.
Comodo Firewall has an option to block fragmented IP datagrams. It is located in Firewall -> Firewall Behavior Settings -> Advanced. THIS MUST BE DISABLED.
You can read the original threads here:
http://forums.comodo.com/firewall-help-cis/unable-
https://forums.comodo.com/firewall-help-cis/allowi
The problem is related to the IP fragmentation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_fragmentation
The solution seems to apply to all the HP printers installed on the network (wired or wireless), not only to the Officejet Pro 8500.
Hope this post can be useful to other users.

Have you tried printing with the firewall un-installed and also making sure that Windows Firewall is disabled? Disabling the firewall might not help as there are instances of the firewall still running in the background.

I am glad that you are now set up. I also came across that post but in my case un-installing the firewall and than re-installing after the printer was setup was the only way I was able to get the printer to work on my home network. Enjoy the printer.

After I modified the IP fragmentation setting, I can print, scan and check ink levels. ![]()
Comodo does not block the executables even in safe mode (Windows Firewall has been always disabled).
